Summer Reading Suggestions - Charlotte Country Day School

CHARLOTTE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL
LOWER SCHOOL 2016 SUMMER READING SUGGESTIONS
The goal of Lower School summer reading is to encourage all students to read a variety of literature genres
throughout their summer break. Student reading experiences should lead to greater fluency as well as
increased appreciation for and interest in reading. This list of suggested titles from which students may
choose includes award winners; library association recommendations; books with multicultural,
environmental, and value-based themes; classic children’s stories; and school favorites. Since the list is
intended for children ranging in age from four to ten, some titles may be more suitable for older children.
Titles with more difficult content or higher reading levels are indicated by an asterisk (*). Titles
available as ebooks through the LS Library’s catalog are noted.
Parents can help their children by:
 Reading aloud to them even if they are able to read independently;
 Making reading an important part of every day;
 Focusing more on the enjoyment of reading and less on literacy strategies;
 Helping them choose books that are appropriate in terms of both reading level and content;
 Visiting the public library and participating in its summer reading program and story hours.
The LS Library Online Resources Table on the LS Library page in Haiku offers a wealth of reading
opportunities:
