Weekly Newsletter for September 26-30

September 30, 2016
Dear Parents/Guardians,
A great week of determination and perseverance! Here are some highlights of our
week:
Monday: We practiced the letter S in our printing books. We introduced
the next part of our Daily 5 program, Work on Writing. Students wrote
in their very own writer’s notebooks. In Math Gr1s completed their
pattern borders and copied it onto a strip of paper. Gr2s continued work
with double attribute patterns. We watched a Bill Nye video on
Magnetism. In Social we read the story Where Do We
Live Really? and discussed where we fit in the world. In
Science the Gr1s practiced mixing primary colours with
wax crayons to see if they could create secondary colours. Gr2s
learned about different uses of magnets and how they can help us.
We created a temporary magnet by stroking a needle with a magnet many times. In
PE we played the game Catch the Tail outside and practiced running around the big
track.
Tuesday: We logged onto the website Mathletics for the first time. Students began
completing some of their patterning assigned tasks. We had a Making Words lesson.
We practiced the letter T in our printing books. We listened to the 3
Primary Colors song and followed along with the lyrics sheet. In
Social we read our classroom version of the Where Do We Live
Really? book. Gr2s wrote their own version
of the story. Gr1s decorated a doll of
themselves belonging to a group of their
choice. In Science the Gr1s worked on
mixing primary colours with tempera
paint. Gr2s worked on sorting different
materials that are magnetic or not.
Wednesday: We built our delicious pattern snacks following
the pattern core of AABB. We began learning about our
national hero Terry Fox. Students wrote about who they
plan to run for. We worked on the letter U in our printing
books. In Daily 5 we worked on our
stamina for Read to Self and Work on Writing. In Math we
continued to work on our patterning tasks on Mathletics. In
Science we read the story Mouse Paint and the Gr1s practiced
painting their own mice with primary and secondary colours. Gr2s
wrote a Magnetism quiz. In Social the Gr2s created their own Me in The World
flipbooks. We shared more Brown Bags.
Thursday: Students began learning about the origin of
Orange Shirt Day. We worked on the letter V in our
printing books. We watched a mini documentary on Terry
Fox and wrote about why he is our hero. In Math we
wrote our patterning unit assessment. Students were
quite excited to demonstrate their perseverance during
the Terry Fox run. Great to see some of you out there too!
We worked on the word families of “ab”, “at”, and “ast”
during Sort and Transfer. We worked on more patterning
tasks on Mathletics.
Friday: The Gr2s went for their first Rec Swim in the morning. Gr1s stayed back
and learned about the different groups they belong to in their family, school, and
community. In Science the Gr1s discovered that adding white to a colour makes it
lighter and black to a colour makes it darker. We wrote
in our Home Journals about our exciting week. We
worked on the letter W in our printing books. In Daily 5
students began having choice as to which centre they
preferred. We wrote and
illustrated many of our
writing ideas inside our
writer’s notebook. In
Social the Gr2s began learning about our country of
Canada. As part of Orange Shirt Day, we discussed
reconciliation and inclusion. We created our own
orange shirt designs and slogans.
