Ragtime, The Musical Launches 79th Season
W
e are very pleased to be
launching our 79th season with
the Tony Award winning musical
Ragtime. Intertwining themes of
love, compassion and strife, this
magnificent show sumptuously
ties the hope of the future to the
turbulence of the past.
Strikingly ambitious and brilliantly written, Ragtime simply
ignites the stage. From the
grandeur of its opening prologue,
to its heart-rending conclusion,
this epic musical beautifully paints
a nostalgic and powerful portrait
of American life at the turn of the
20th Century. Based on E.L.
Doctorow's distinguished novel,
Ragtime seamlessly intertwines the
stories of three remarkable families; one upper-middle class WASP,
one Jewish immigrant and one
African American, all caught in the
social clashes of the period. The
Tony Award winning score
includes Wheels of a Dream, Back
to Before and Make Them Hear You.
Touching and triumphant, Ragtime
is an American classic. (Adult
Themes)

s our 79th season heads into
full swing, we are putting the final
touches on our Artist-in-Residence
program. Designed as a permanent
addition to our scheduled programming, we have sought out professionals of national acclaim to
broaden the artistic and cultural
experiences found in Kalamazoo. By
carefully selecting artists that have
diverse backgrounds and training,
we are making a wide array of talent
and skill available to our community.
Cheryl Blaylock will be our Guest
Puppet Artist for Avenue Q.
Jim Carver returns to direct
The Foursome.
Two very talented people will be
spending time in Kalamazoo during
the 2007-2008 season as part of
this program. In addition to our
staff and the volunteers directly
involved with specific productions,
members of the community will
have the opportunity to get to
know these talented artists through
a series or workshops, classes,
luncheons and post show talk
backs.
Cheryl Blaylock, a Kalamazoo
native, will be coming back to
Kalamazoo as our Guest Puppet
Artist to train the Avenue Q cast
members in the art of puppetry. An
Emmy award-winning designer and
puppeteer, Cheryl's television credits include Eureeka's Castle, Blue's
Room, Bear in the Big Blue House and
Sesame Street. Her film work
includes Dark Crystal and Muppets
Take Manhattan. Cheryl's training
has included working closely with
Jim Henson and Frank Oz. A much
sought after artist, Cheryl has presented workshops on puppetry in
Scotland, Switzerland and throughout the United States.
Jim Carver will be returning to the
Civic to direct our production of
The Foursome, which will be presented in April. Anyone that knows Jim
knows that a play that takes place
on a golf course is a perfect fit. Jim
literally grew up here at the Civic,
watching from the back row of the
Auditorium as his parents
rehearsed. He joined the professional staff of the Kalamazoo Civic
Theatre in 1959 as a Production
Assistant- building, painting,
lighting, teaching and directing. In
1968 Jim was promoted to Business
Manager and in 1974 was named
Managing Director; the position he
held until his retirement in 1997.
Jim has directed hundreds of plays,
earning an international reputation
as a highly respected director. Two
of his productions were selected in
national competition to represent
the United States at international
festivals- the most recent being
Dancing at Lughnasa, which was presented at the World Amateur
Theatre Festival in Monaco, where it
was acclaimed as "the finest production ever by an American
Company."
You won't want to miss the opportunity to visit with these artists
later this season as they bring their
skills and talents back to
Kalamazoo.

by William Shakespeare
Four hundred years after it was written, Shakespeare’s dark depiction of ambition, guilt
and murder continues to cast a powerful spell over audiences. Indeed, something wicked
this way comes as Macbeth’s bloody rise to power unfolds in the last of Shakespeare’s
four great tragedies. While Macbeth responds to the prophecies of the play’s famous trio
of witches, Lady Macbeth’s ambition and thirst for power leads her into an unnatural
realm of witchcraft, insomnia and madness. Poetically rich, this “tale told by a genius”
offers a glimpse into the psychology of murder and the disintegration of a flawed hero
into moral decay. (Adult Themes)
