WELCOME TO PATH STUDIES
What is Open UAS?
In Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (Mamk), Open University of Applied Sciences (Open UAS) is
a part of the lifelong learning concept. Open UAS studies are available for all regardless of age or
educational background. Open UAS offers individual courses and courses integrated with degree
students.
Study path in Open UAS
In the open study path, a student will complete approximately 60 ECTS credits during one academic
year in a field of study he/she has chosen. The student of open study path will complete the first
year studies according to the Degree programme curriculum of his/her field of study. It is possible to
study in the Open UAS even without the work experience or preliminary studies required from
degree students. However, the open study path may have some prerequisites, e.g. knowledge of
Finnish language.
After the completion of 60 ECTS credits in the open study path, a student is eligible to apply in the
separate application and may be selected as a degree student in Mamk. The student may also apply
in the national joint application if the student fills all of the requirements for application. The
application directions and requirements may change annually.
Path students are informed of the next joint application and separate application
period before application begins.
If you meet the admission
requirements, you can apply through
the national joint application. The
degree programmes in English begin in
the end of August and the application
period for them is in January.
The entrance examination criteria are
defined by a department or a study
field.
You can check selection criteria at:
www.mamk.fi/applying
When you have completed 60 credits
in open path studies with the chosen
professional field, you can apply
through the separate application. You
can apply to be a degree student
regardless of your educational
background. The application is
continuous. More information on
www.mamk.fi/applying --> From open
path to degree studies.
The selection of student is based on
the following criteria (varies between
study fields)
A) The amount of credits completed
and the average of grades
B) The entrance examination (varies
between study fields, e.g. interview,
aptitude test)
C) The average of grades and the
entrance examination
In a case that you are selected for a degree programme, the completed courses
will be accredited to degree studies and you will be moved to the most suitable
study group.

Studying in the open study path
A student selected for the open study path will complete the 60 ECTS credits according to a PSP
(Personal Study Plan). The open study path student will study in the degree student group of the
chosen study field. The open path student will primarily complete his/her studies in the same group
with degree students. However, exceptions can be made according to a student’s own background
and wishes.
The open study path studies are similar to normal degree studies. A student studying in the path is
eligible for same services as degree students. Library services, technical support and student affairs
office services are available to all path students. In case of a need for special arrangements related
to your studies (e.g. disability, health issues), contact the student affairs office before the beginning
of path studies.
Rules and guidelines for open study path
There are certain guidelines to be taken into consideration when studying in the path because the
student won’t complete a degree.

Studying in the Open UAS does not entitle you to a study grant or other student benefits or
discounts. In case you intend to study unemployed, please make sure in the local
employment office (TE-toimisto) your livelihood situation before you begin your studies.
Your livelihood has to be secured either with a deposit in your own bank account or with an
official scholarship/grant.
A path student in Open UAS is not eligible for student, traveling or meal benefits from KELA
(Kansaneläkelaitos), the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. However, a path student is
eligible to get a discount from the school cafeterias with a meal support card. The card will
be given to the path student in the beginning of his/her studies.
For studies at the Open University students are required to have a valid health insurance and
a travel insurance.
If you are not a citizen of Finland, it is possible that you have to have a valid residence
permit or visa in order to study in the Open UAS. More information at:
http://www.mamk.fi/exchange/permits
A path student of Open UAS must apply for degree studies and be selected as a degree
student if he/she wants to graduate with a degree from Mamk.
Some departments in Mamk can include practical training and/or thesis as a part of your
path studies, but generally these are not included in open study path curricula.
Open UAS does not accept accreditation of previous studies in the open study path.
However, previous expertise or knowledge can be taken into consideration during the
planning of a personal study plan (PSP) and during the studies, if the lecturer in charge
advocates it. Any studies you have completed in the Mamk Open UAS can be accredited as a
part of your degree if you will continue the studies as a degree student of the same study
field in Mamk.
As a path student you may also enroll for any individual Open UAS course with the tuition
fee without any extra charges. Please, check first if the course you want to enroll is also
available in SoleOPS, and if it is, enrol on ASIO/Student Affairs Office. The courses offered in
Open UAS can be found at: www.mamk.fi/openstudies. Remember to select tuition as a
payment method!

BEGINNING YOUR STUDIES IN THE OPEN UAS
Explore your field of study
All degree programme curricula are public in SoleOPS at:
https://soleops.mamk.fi/opsnet/disp/en/welcome/nop?menuid=0 . You can explore and get
acquainted with your study field’s curriculum beforehand. You can start planning in advance which
courses you want to complete during the open study path.
More information on the study fields is available at: http://www.mamk.fi/studies/study_fields.
Select the field of study you want to read more about.
Beginning studies as a path student
The start date of the studies will be provided in the invitation letter sent to you by the Open UAS
office. The studies will begin with orientation classes with your own study group. The orientation
classes will provide useful information on the studies. Also many practical issues related to the
studies are covered during orientation. We strongly suggest for all the students to participate in the
orientation of your study group, until you have completed your PSP and have chosen the courses
according to it.
Remember to keep your ID with you
In the beginning of studies you will receive the user name and login information for many
applications, e.g. ASIO, school email and e-learning system Moodle. To receive them you will have to
proof your identity with a valid ID (e.g. passport). Remember to visit your email regularly and also
update your new email address to the ASIO student records.
Estimated study time, the right to study and the enrolment for attendance
The estimated time for open study path studies (60 credits) is 1 year. The first year enrolment for
attendance has been made on your behalf. The regular duration of the right to study is 2 years. You
can continue your studies for the second year, in which case you will need to make the enrolment
for attendance yourself. The enrolment for attendance will be completed in ASIO at
https://asio.mikkeliamk.fi. You can find the instructions for enrolment for attendance at
http://www.mamk.fi/studies/open_studies/prime105_en.aspx The enrolment period for attendance
is announced in Student. You can also ask instructions for enrolment of attendance in the Student
Affairs Office.
Mamk OUAS reserves the right to reject the right to study because of unpaid fee(s).
Personal Study Plan (PSP)
PSP is a customized study plan according to the curricula of your study group. The PSP will help you
plan your studies and complete the studies according to your objective and the estimated study
time. However, the main principle is that you follow the group curriculum as it is. The PSP
discussions will be arranged directly with your mentor teacher.
Course enrolment 3.10. - 16.10.2016
At the beginning of your studies the Student Affairs Office’s coordinators organize to your group an
information session, where you are primed how the course enrolment takes place. It is advisable to
enroll on every course according to group curriculum. After your personal study plan is complete,
and if there are any changes compared to group curriculum, you can change your enrolments at
Student Affairs Office afterwards. If you continue on the path next semester, you must make sure
that you enrol on future courses on the time period mentioned above! Instructions for course
3
enrollments can be found at http://www.mamk.fi/studies/open_studies/prime105_en.aspx. If
needed, ask for advice at the Student Affairs Office.
Timetable
After the beginning of the studies you are obliged to follow the timetable of your study group and
the courses you have enrolled on. The Student timetables can be found at: https://student.xamk.fi
or http://tilat.mikkeliamk.fi/kalenterit2/index.php?guest=/mamk&setlang=eng. Choose Programme
calendars and search for your own group code in the list. Please note that the course schedules or
classes in the timetable may change over time. We strongly suggest for the students to check the
timetable or Student intranet regularly for changes. Some courses are not included in the Student
timetable. In this case you will receive the necessary information on the schedules in the invitation
letter sent to you in the beginning of your studies.
Grades
After a course has ended, the lecturers will put the grades in ASIO within one month of the date of
the completion of the course. The path students will not receive a certificate from individual
courses. Instead the path students can get a transcript of records from the Open UAS office or the
Student Affairs Office.
USEFUL INFORMATION
Student – Students’ own intranet
One of the most important information sources is the student intranet, called Student. In Student
you will find useful information related to studies. Student is an intranet where you will need to
login. You will receive the login information for Student in the beginning of your studies. You can
login to Student at: https://student.xamk.fi.
Individual courses in Open UAS
During the studies in open study path, you are also able to enroll for any individual courses. The realtime course calendar is available at: http://www.mamk.fi/openstudies. Please, check first if the
course you want to enroll is also available in SoleOPS, and if it is, enrol on ASIO/Student Affairs
Office. When you enroll for individual courses the course invitation, cancellation and other
information will be sent via email.
Fees and cancellation terms
The fee for a semester is 150 euros. If you want to cancel your study place you can do it 2 weeks
before the studies begin. After that the semester fee must be paid in full amount.
The fee is charged every semester, from both fall and spring semester. In the case of a cancellation
in the middle of the semester you will be charged the fee with full amount, regardless of how many
courses you have attended or completed.
In a case that you are eligible for a discount (students of upper secondary education), please provide
a certificate of the eligibility at the beginning of your studies to the Open UAS.
If you want to discontinue your studies, please contact the Open UAS office immediately!
Studying and learning capabilities
There are many ways to learn and many situations in life when learning is important and timely. If it
has been a long time since you were last studying, we suggest that you get yourself familiar with
learning capabilities before beginning your studies.
4
The issues related to learning capabilities that are essential for students are e.g. planning your study
goals, time-management and learning difficulties. More information can be found in many internet
sources. You can search for information and test e.g. which type of learning suits for you. We can
also arrange study related student counseling for our students if necessary. In this case, you can
contact your mentor teacher and ask for student counseling to be arranged for you.
In case of an illness or an injury
If you get sick during your studies, you should consult first-hand with the health services at your
disposal (e.g. health care services arranged by employer). In an acute situation you can also use the
student health care provided by Mamk. As a path student you are insured for injuries or accidents.
DISCONTINUING PATH STUDIES
You should inform the Open UAS office immediately if you decide to discontinue your open study
path. You should always inform the Open UAS office directly of your decision to discontinue studies.
If you don’t make the enrolment for attendance for the 2nd academic year, your studies will
automatically be discontinued after the 1st year.
If you wish to continue path studies after the 2nd academic year, you need to apply again for the
right to study for the same study group. The application for extended study period is completed with
a separate form, which will be provided for you before your regular right to study (2 academic years)
ends.
CONTINUING FROM OPEN STUDY PATH TO DEGREE STUDIES
In a case where you are selected to study a degree as a degree student, remember to:
•
•
•
•
•
Inform the Open UAS office that you are discontinuing your path studies.
Contact the Student affairs office for the transfer of your study records. As a degree student,
a new study records card (in ASIO) will be created for you. All the studies you have
completed in the Open UAS should be transferred to your new study records as well.
Start using your new ASIO user name and login information immediately when you receive
them. The old study records in the Open UAS ASIO records will be removed at the end or
beginning of the term and after this they will be no longer available for use.
Keep the login information for email, Moodle and Student as they will remain the same
when you begin your degree studies.
Change your password in ASIO and it will be updated for other user platforms as well. If you
need help with the user name or login information, contact Helpdesk.
