The concept of STEAM brings together Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. Students have put together a truly spectacular display in the atrium entitled: ‘Grand construction of Kingsdale Foundation School’s – Installation of Inventions’. Good luck Kingsdale students on your competition entry! We are excited by this year’s new provision in the Sixth Form that ensures that our students get the best careers advice for the next stage of their lives. Not all students are sure of what they want to do after school, hence this is an aspect that we are specifically targeting, in addition to everything else that we do already. Each student in the 6th form gets independent advice and guidance from a highly trained independent advisor, at each stage of their sixth form journey. Initially, they get a consultation interview, where an action plan is developed for the students, to ensure that they explore the areas of interest that they may like to pursue. A follow-up meeting is held with each student later in the year, in order to evaluate impact and to make further suggestions where required. We are particularly proud of the fact that this provision is for the entire sixth form. Drop in sessions are also available to the students with more urgent needs. Students complete a careers-related journal in their tutortime, which helps them to explore and to research at this important phase of their education. Trips to the City are also in the pipeline. Essentially, we are working at making sure that students have the most helpful guidance that will be useful and effective in their next phase, be it tertiary education or employment. Scrooge and the Seven Dwarfs at 503 Theatre Thursday 8th December 2016 - Year 8 On Thursday 8th December 2016 a lucky group of Year 8s travelled to the 503 Theatre for a production of Scrooge and the Seven Dwarfs, an experimental four-man pantomime ‘mash-up’ of A Christmas Carol, The Wizard of Oz and Snow White. Thematically linked to the Year 8 study of Charles Dickens, the trip was an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the experience of professional theatre; but that’s not to say it wasn’t also interactive and thoroughly fun. In the words of Year 8 student Natasha, “I loved that the audience were involved in the play as well; we sang along, were asked questions, and even got to throw lemons at one of the actors! I also thought that all the music, scenery and costumes were very clever. I really enjoyed the experience.” Thanks must go to Ms Paja for organising and coordinating the trip. Music concerts We had various Christmas music concerts in the school last term. Here are a few of the pictures from these fantastic events Sports News London Schools’ Cross Country Winners! Congratulations to our Year 7 boys who came second in the South London 5-a-side tournament, hosted by Millwall FC. A great effort from the boys who played mesmerizing football! Well done! The Importance of African History Lewis Latimer (1848-1928) The reason why it is important for young people to learn about Black History in Kingsdale School is because many of our young people are not aware of the contributions that black people have made to World History. We often say that “African History is the missing pages of World History”. For example, Lewis Latimer is not often credited with his immense contribution to the invention of the light bulb. He invented the Carbon Filament used for the light bulb. During the month of October 2016 we also held presentations on Harriet Tubman; the history of Black music & dance, and also had somebody come and speak about the history of the African drum which allowed the young people to participate by playing on the drums. If teachers, parents and children learnt more of the great contribution that Africans and the black people have made to the world it would give us the opportunity to give more value, open our minds to greater learning and give a more balanced view of society and the world. Mr M Silvera Lewis Howard Latimer was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1848, to parents who had fled slavery. Latimer learned the art of mechanical drawing while working at a patent firm. Over the course of his career as a draftsman, Latimer worked closely with Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. At the age of 16, he lied about his age in order to enlist in the United States Navy during the Civil War. Returning to Boston after an honorable discharge, he accepted a menial position at the Crosby and Gould patent law office. He taught himself mechanical drawing and drafting by observing the work of draftsmen at the firm. Recognising Latimer's talent and promise, the firm partners promoted him from office boy to draftsman. In addition to assisting others, Latimer designed a number of his own inventions. Kingsdale Prize Giving We are extremely proud of our students. A number of prize giving events were held on the 11th & 25th November at various times on these days. They were occasions to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of the last academic year and to celebrate all that makes Kingsdale Foundation School such a special place in which to learn and flourish. It must be stated that the year 2015 - 16 saw exceptional achievements by our students and during the prize giving ceremonies, their individual effort, determination and commitment were acknowledged. The first of the Prize Giving and Awards Ceremonies was attended by the Chair of Governors, Hon. Alderman of Southwark Mrs Norma Gibbes, who acknowledged the academic achievements and progress of the Year 8 and 9 students. In the afternoon, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes, our special guest of honour, praised the efforts and resilience of students in Years 10 and 11, in a separate prize giving event. In her speech to the students, she highlighted the need for us to be resilient and hardworking. The final prize giving event, held on the evening of Friday 25th November was for graduates, post 16 students and for all other students with exceptional accomplishment during the academic year. The Guest of Honour was Mrs Patti Mazhude, Governor & Corporate Counsel, who spoke to the students of their achievements but also of those that they could aspire to with hard work and dedication. The students successes were reflected in the presentation of well over 850 certificates and prizes for academic excellence, progress and community service. Our students have been well supported by our dedicated staff, their families and friends. It was indeed a pleasure for all to share in their success on these special days. Mathematics Trip to Florence Italy 2016 26th to 30th September 2016; Year 8, 9 and 10 scholars and Gifted and Talented in Mathematics went on an educational trip to Florence, Italy, the home of Museo Galileo, Archimedes and Leonardo da Vinci who have Museums dedicated to their inventions based on their knowledge of Mathematics and Astronomy. Students explored developments from understanding that the world is round and not flat to the invention of instruments of war, including early understanding of flying objects later leading to the invention of planes. We had the opportunity of visiting grand architectural buildings like the Cathedral of Florence and later visited the Tower of Pisa. Mr Silvera Director of Mathematics Congratulations to Ashley Scott, Year 10! Ashley was awarded a place on the Trinity Laban Young Dance Ambassador Scheme. For each stage of the competition the students must learn 50 words and therefore 200 words in total for the National Final. Each competitor has to translate and spell as many words as possible in one minute using a foreign alphabet including accents! We wish our students the very best of luck! House Assemblies - Anti-Bullying Month The House Assemblies during anti-bullying week 14th – 18th November 2016 had a clear message for all students, highlighting the traumatic issues surrounding bullying and the devastating effect it can have for the victims and their families. The overall message was also to encourage all students to remember that the Kingsdale community is a 'telling school' and that they have many different people around them, including their peers to whom they can speak to or seek help or advice. The whole school competition called 'Actionwork' has helped to raise awareness further of bullying and its ill effects. Below are some positive thoughts, regarding positive relationships in the community, read by students each day, to promote Anti-Bullying week: Monday: “I would rather be a little nobody, than to be an evil somebody.” Abraham Lincoln Tuesday: “Stop letting people who do so little for you control so much of your mind, feelings and emotions.” Will Smith Wednesday:"Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right.” Theodore Roosevelt Thursday: “My self-worth is not linked to your cruel words and actions. My selfesteem is not affected by your deliberate attempts to destroy my character. You have no power over me. You will not silence me.” Marina Cohen Friday:"Bullying is a horrible thing. It sticks with you forever. It poisons you. But only if you let it."
