Would you like to give your students the chance to look at images of original documents
in the classroom?
Warwickshire County Record Office has everything from a nineteenth century Album of
Known Thieves to documents detailing the daily life of inmates in Warwickshire prisons.
Heritage Education has compiled a CD with images of ten of these documents, together
with teachers’ notes and transcripts, for use for study in the classroom.
The documents include:

a newspaper article describing living conditions in Warwick gaol in the 1700s

an extract from a burial register from the 1700s depicting a brutal murder

details of the daily diet for prisoners in Warwick Prison Gaol in 1872

a page from the nineteenth century Album of Known Thieves

information from court records on the crimes committed by Victorian children and the
punishments given to them

parish records documenting the removal of vagrants

details of criminal activity found in applications for poor relief from Victorian Boards of
Health

A photograph of daily activities in the Cape Road prison in Warwick from the 1900s.
The CD costs £50 (plus postage and packing) and will be available from May 2013.
