2012report - Alaska Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Annual Report FY12
(July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012)
Thank you FY 2012 Donors
for supporting our mission to equip Alaskans who are
blind and visually impaired for success in life and work.
The Alaska Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired served
11 people during its first year in existence. During FY 2012 the
Center’s 35th anniversary, we were proud to serve over 400
Alaskans – more than ever before.
Circle of Visionaries Alaska. Our Board of Directors takes very seriously the responNow, as in 1977, we are the only vision rehabilitation agency in

sibility to serve the entire state. In FY12 our staff helped clients
in Anchorage and 27 other communities. Thanks to a grant from
the Mat-Su Health Foundation, we now have our first staff member located in the fast-growing Mat-Su Valley.
We have also made a commitment to provide $100 worth of
magnifiers and other equipment to each client every time we
have a low vision clinic either in Anchorage or in rural communities—319 Alaskans in FY12.
The need will continue to grow during this decade. Ten percent
of Americans 65 and older identify themselves as having difficulty
or severe difficulty seeing. In Alaska that amounts to about 5,000
people, with the number expected to double by 2020.
Thank you to our government partners, especially the Alaska
Division of Vocational Rehabilitation—we couldn’t do it without you. Now more than ever we also depend on community
support from individuals, organizations (especially Alaska Lions
Clubs), and businesses.
Thank you for your commitment to lives of meaning
and purpose for 15,000 Alaskans with vision loss.
Pick. Click. Give.
Thank you for giving a little extra in support of the Center’s
mission through the Pick.Click.Give. charitable giving
program in 2012. This year your donation will go farther
as you will be clicking once and giving twice. Thank you to
the Mountain View Lions, Knights of the Blind, who have
pledged to match up to $5,000 of your gifts to the Center
over and above our 2012 total!
