beings. In doing so, they produced some of the most troubling and
misunderstood works of literature ever penned. This course will
examine these literary documents and the questions they raise

S-17-39 Revenge and Reconciliation:
Two Approaches to Justice:
Shakespeare's “Hamlet” and
“The Tempest.”
Study Group Leader: Joel Feimer PhD

Six sessions: 4/27/2017 - 6/1/2017
Location: Albertus Magnus Aquinas Hall
Maximum: 25
Course Fee: $10
April 27; May 4, 11, 18, 25; June 1.
Revenge tragedy was among the
most popular genres of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. Shakespeare, taking cues from Thomas
Kyd and Christopher Marlowe, created some of the most perfect examples of this type, including his early “Most Lamentable Tragedy of
Titus Andronicus,” which was in constant production during Shakespeare's lifetime and after. In “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of
Denmark,” Shakespeare created one of the most morally driven
examples of the genre. Hamlet's quest for vengeance is driven by
a moral imperative and informed by a restoration of justice and
order to the Kingdom of Denmark. In his farewell to the theatre,
Shakespeare deconstructs the imperatives of revenge and presents completely novel instruments of justice, forgiveness and reconciliation in his lyrical fantasy, “The Tempest.”. These two plays
will be examined as polar opposite approaches to the restoration
of order and justice in Shakespeare's works.

April 6, 20, 27; May 4, 11, 18, 25; June 1. There is

Green Knight" as well as works by Marie deFrance, Langland,

S-17-44 Planetary Systems:
Ours and Many, Many others
Study Group Leader: Arnold Heiser
Friday: 10:00 AM—11:30 AM
Six sessions: 3/31/2017 - 5/12/2017
Location: Albertus Magnus Aquinas Hall
Maximum: 20
Course Fee: $10
March 31; April 7, 21, 28; May 5, 12. A planetary system consists
of a central star, in our case the Sun, and any number of bound
planets, sometimes just one, that revolve around the star. Our
planetary system, the Solar System, also contains celestial bodies
like dwarf planets, natural satellites (moons), asteroids, comets,
and meteoroids. Similarly, other planetary systems may contain
these kinds of celestial objects. Very young planetary systems
may also contain planetesimals and circumstellar disks. The discovery of thousands of planets surrounding other stars, during the
last 25 years or so, has raised a multitude of questions about the
formation and subsequent evolution of all planetary systems.
