Counting Money in Excel
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that can perform
numerical calculations and bookkeeping tasks.
Step 1. Open up Microsoft Excel:
You can access this program by following the path of:
Start
→ Programs →
Microsoft Office
→
Microsoft Office Excel 2003
When you open Microsoft Excel, you will see a screen such as the one
below.
Step 2: Open up the template
Go to the website:
http://www.northcanton.sparcc.org/~technology/excel/files/Counting_
Money.xls
You will see a page that looks like the one below:
Step 3: Explore the application:

Four items and their prices are shown at the top of the
spreadsheet.
Students will fill in the boxes below the price with the quantities of
pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters that they think it would take
to buy that item.
As they do so, the value of the coins they have chosen will be
shown at the bottom.
As they get a correct answer, have them see if there is more than
one way to equal that price.
For the fifth item, you or they can put in any price and then have
them see what coins are needed to buy the item.
Use this activity to explore the value of coins and adding coins.
