TRANSFORMING
“There is a process in which one moves
within to come out again as another, it
is a process of re-birth. It is only when in

ability to redefine ourselves and move
forward...this describes the process of

D
ancers of Damelahamid is a
professional Aboriginal dance
company from the northwest
coast of British Columbia. The
Gitxsan ‘people of the river of mists’ are
part of the coastal group of cultures that
have the distinctive button blanket regalia.
Their rich history of masked dance inspires
a compelling performance, celebrating
the diversity and depth of the beautiful
Indigenous cultures across Canada.
Luu hlotitxw, roughly translated as
Spirit Transforming, is an exploration and
meditation on the process of introspection
and self-discovery that all people must go
through.
Interweaving traditional and contemporary
practices with modern technologies, Spirit
Transforming tells the story of an Aboriginal
youth who, with the assistance of the everpresent ancestors, passes through trial and
emerges transformed.
The performance captivates from its
opening moments, as the company’s
women glide across the stage as a pack of
orca with beautifully carved fins upon their
backs. Through new technology, we are
transported to an animated spirit world
and a lake of rolling fog becomes the arena
for the young man’s transformation.
With original choreography and songs
inspired by traditional Gitxsan masked
dance, this is a moving work with a relevant
message to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
people. Through wheeling, evocative dance,
exquisite design, and uplifting singing and
drumming, it gives tangible form to a
universal spiritual voyage.

6 GUITARS
“5 stars! Chase Padgett’s 6 Guitars
is nothing short of a storytelling
masterpiece.The play will leave you
doing two things: laughing until you
cry, and lifting your jaw to its proper
position.” – The Edmonton Sun.
– Georgia Straight
6
Guitars is a pitch perfect blend of
music, comedy and unforgettable
characters. Chase Padgett delivers
a virtuosic performance as he
becomes six different guitar players
- each with their own distinct voice,
views and musical style (Blues, Jazz,
Rock, Classical, Folk and Country). Each
character plays music, shares their history
with music from discovery to mastery,
and then celebrates or skewers the other
genres. “I don’t need fancy chords for
country. Just play G. What’s wrong with
G? If your chord has a number in it you’re
a jerk.” With plenty of laughs and songs
from all genres this show is for the music
lover in all of our hearts.
Since the show’s premiere in 2010
6 Guitars has earned numerous awards,
rave reviews and standing ovations all
over North America. It has relentlessly
sold out houses in every festival it has
appeared in and won Pick of the Fringe
for both Edmonton and Vancouver. It is
also one of the top 5 highest grossing
acts in the history of the Winnipeg Fringe
Festival where it sold almost 3000 tickets
in 12 days.
Hilarious, charming and at times
surprisingly poignant, 6 Guitars is a
show so good, you’ll want to see it again
and again.

DANCE
THEATRE
CELEBRATING

OTUS O Dance Theatre turns
25! In celebration of this quarter
century milestone the company
is touring The Best Of MOTUS
O with six of their dancers… There is a
plethora of reputable works to choose
from, and MOTUS O has selected their
most popular nostalgic and classic pieces
that have been entertaining audiences
across Canada for 25 years.
MOTUS O is Latin for “the method of
movement”. In the Artistic Director’s
words “…we want to know the meaning of
every movement and to move as if it has
meaning.” Physical inventiveness, lightning
action, grace and raw energy are all trademarks of their evolving style.
The Artistic Directors of MOTUS O, James
Croker, Cynthia Croker and Jack Langehuizen, have been trained in several artistic
disciplines with decades of combined performing experience in both street theatre
and stage. This diversity, coupled with their
collaborative style of creating, enriches the
production values and constantly surprises
the viewer. Each production displays their
unique ability to be involved in the whole
creative process. They create the story, design and build costumes and props, choreograph, shoot and edit film and if that is not
enough, they also perform.
Since their formation in 1990, MOTUS O
has created seventeen full-length productions for both family and adult audiences.
The troupe continues to tour throughout
North America, Europe and the South
Seas, bringing with them their innovative
and highly visual works to both small and

S
leeping Beauty is one of the world‘s
most famous classical ballets and
holds a place in the repertoire of
virtually every major company. After
more than 25 successful years, Canada‘s
Ballet Jörgen has created its own unique
classical ballet rendition with its World
Premiere Tour this 2015-2016 season.
This ballet tells the enchanting story of
Aurora and her prince, complete with its
inherently magical qualities and dazzling
choreography. The fairytale of a young
woman placed under a spell to sleep for a
hundred years only to be awakened by a
kiss is an easily accessible story. It appeals
to a child’s imagination and holds a special
place in the hearts of adults.
Told in three acts, the ballet benefits from
the character development and technical
expertise for which Canada’s Ballet Jörgen
is known. Artistic Director and awardwinning choreographer Bengt Jörgen
focuses on the magical elements and the
interpretation of the ballet as a nature
allegory: The young woman represents
nature, the wicked fairy is winter, who
deadens life with pricks of frost until a
young man, spring, cuts away the brambles
to allow the sun to awaken sleeping
nature. Sleeping Beauty spins a tale of
nature and love that will inspire young and
old alike.
The delightful story will be danced to
the original 1890 score by Pyotr Ilyich
Tchaikovsky. In ensemble with stunning
costumes and captivating lighting
design, Ballet Jörgen’s Sleeping Beauty
is guaranteed to provide an evening of
entertaining and inspiring live performance.

work through a shared creative
process. They are bringing to our
stage a powerful, mixed gender piece called
Vital Few.
Inspired by the exchange between urban
and contemporary forms, 605 places emphasis on movement, innovation and physically
demanding works. The company aims to
offer a highly athletic art form derived from
the human experience, exploring new paths
and creative methods to build powerful and
engaging performances.
605 Collective’s brand new work with six
unique performers, has been a collaborative
undertaking utilizing mechanisms of
constant codependence and interrelation
between the dancers. Each performer’s
own distinct expressions and movement
are woven together to collectively build
the moving sculpture of the group body,
the whole greater than the sum of its parts.
VITAL FEW
Acknowledging both an autonomy and
responsibility to the group, the struggle
of coexistence within the set parameters

content of this hyperconnected dance. The
work pushes the company into new physical
territory to further explore the essence of
unison and togetherness, the negotiation of
group dynamics, and the preservation of self
inside the collective consciousness.
With a rapidly expanding repertoire, 605

ancouver playwright, actor, and
Fringe Fest favourite TJ Dawe
relates a funny and enlightening
story about running track and
field to please his high-school-principaldad-and failing miserably.
TJ is an open book, and invites you into
his quirky introspective world of selfreflection and the human experience
with such quick humour and train-ofthought, you will find yourself leaning
forward in your seat in an effort to catch
every word.
Those familiar with Dawe’s intimate,
personal, and often profoundly funny
monologues - we’ve had Canadian
Bartender at Butlins and Medicine on the
Capitol stage - won’t be surprised that
Marathon treads similar ground. He’s
been working on getting to the truth
of who he really is, using interwoven
narratives to reconcile the past and
present in the hope of moving forward. In
“Dawe’s descriptive ability
shines as he describes running
a track meet against Satan.”
- Orlando Sentinel
this case, that means reflecting on longdistance running, high school, his father,
’80s movies, Enneagram tests, and Satan.
Dawe says that when he was a teenager
there was no escaping the message that
high school was everything. His parents
were both educators, his teachers assured
him that it would never get better
than those years, and ’80s teen movies
constantly reinforced that assumption. The
overwhelming message was, that through
hard work and intention, anybody could
be radically transformed and have all
their problems solved. In Marathon, Dawe
wanted to explore the parallels of that
misconception that he found in his adult
life and his failures as a high-school athlete.

Take a moment, thank a volunteer!
When it comes to running the Capitol Theatre,
volunteers are at the heart of it all. They choose
to spend their time behind the bar, handing
out programs, painting sets, and in the costume
department. Whether it’s a professional touring
show or a local community event, they are there
supporting the performance. These are people
from our community who care about the Capitol,
and feel passionately about the joy it brings to
everyone that comes through our doors.
Thank you
volunteers!
