The Anglo-Saxons used a different figure of

substitutes a noun with two other words that,
when compounded together, describe the
noun.

ending!)
Who is the main character – what are their
character traits?

book?
What book would you compare it to and why?
Who would enjoy reading this book and why?
English
Task
The Anglo Saxons enjoyed word play and told
riddles for entertainment.
For instance, “wave-vat” is a kenning for
“ocean,” and “battle-torch” is used in place of
“sword” (and more specifically, a sword that
has been sharpened until it shines like a torch).
Write your own kenning about an animal – real
or mythical!
Research 3 riddles, then have a go at writing
your own.
Eg: I appear on the ground like a blanket,
and melt in the midday sun. What am I?
