Hull House: A Home for Social Work
Jane Addams was born into a wealthy family, but she devoted her life to the social
welfare of those less fortunate. As a young woman, Addams became convinced that in
order to help the poor, she must know them first. She told a friend, Ellen Gates Starr,
her ideas. Addams wanted to establish a special home. Privileged young women would
live and work among the poor of Chicago. Starr was enthusiastic. The two women
decided to turn Addams’ idea into a reality.
In September 1889, the two women opened Hull-House. Named for the builder,
Hull-House became Chicago’s first settlement house. Hull-House became a hub of
community social work. There, Addams and Starr ran a nursery. They started a
kindergarten. They also provided games and counseling for older children. They took
care of sick children and talked doctors into donating their services. The women
taught adult classes in childcare, cooking and nutrition, and home management.
The activities of Addams and Starr extended beyond the walls of Hull-House.
The two women began by helping wherever they were needed. They worked alongside
the people in the community. In doing so, they gradually earned respect.
