“The Raven”
Poetic Parody
A parody is an imitation (usually
intended to be humorous) of a literary or
artistic work.
Assignment:
Write three or more stanzas of a parody of "The Raven." You might use
another bird or animal in place of the raven, change the reason for the
speaker's sorrow, or invent a new message for the intruder to utter.
Whatever you change, try to follow Poe's meter and rhyme schemes so that
your parody will be recognizable. Create your parody to have a medical
theme.

Poe Parody Original Poetry Rubric
(4)Exceeds Expectations
Student mastered the
concept of rhyme scheme
and successfully mimicked
Poe`s (or the original song)
rhyming style. There is an
apparent and consistent
pattern in the rhyme scheme
and follows Poe`s ABCBBB
style.
(3)Meets Expectations
An apparent rhyme
scheme is visible, but the
student did not mimic
Poe`s "The Raven" (or the
original song)
successfully. Student has
an original rhyme scheme
throughout the poem and
follows through each
stanza consistently.
(2)Needs Improvement
Student may have showed
an understanding of
rhyme scheme but may
not have an obvious
pattern from stanza to
stanza. An attempt was
made and effort can be
seen, however, the overall
effect was not quite
successful.
Artistic Effort
Syntactically correct and
mimics Poe`s "The Raven"
(or the original song)
effectively. Has a rhyme
scheme that mimics Poe`s
"The Raven" (or the original
song) and has a creative
topic that is shown in the
poem effectively. The
student obviously spent time
and effort on this
assignment and went above
and beyond what was
required. Has a minimum of
3 stanzas.
Poem appears to have
been done in a hurry.
Work is sloppy or missing
parts. May have
inconsistent rhyme
scheme, meter, or may not
make sense as a narrative
poem. Does not do an
effective job of
mimicking Poe`s "The
Raven" (or the original
song). Overall, this is
average: there are
spelling, grammar, or
mechanical mistakes; it
seems sloppy or careless.
Stanzas
Poem has at least 3 stanzas
with 6 lines in each stanza the structure matches Poe`s
"The Raven" (or it mimics
the structure of the original
song).
Good attempt, but does
not mimic Poe`s poem (or
the original song)
precisely. Could have one
of the following criteria:
1) Great poem, but not a
parody of Poe`s "The
Raven" (or the original
song) 2) attempts to
parody "The Raven" (or
the original song) but
misses the mark with
meter, rhyme scheme,
and/or meaning. Also,
poem may have spelling,
grammar, or mechanical
mistakes.
Poem may have the
required 18 lines, but does
not follow Poe`s (or the
original song) exact
format. Effort is shown,
but it does not exactly
mimic "The Raven" (or
the original song).
Spelling and
Grammar
There are no spelling or
grammatical errors.

N/A
Rhyme
Scheme
Poem may have separate
stanzas, but either 1) does
not meet the required
length of a minimum of
24 lines (48 lines if with a
partner) 2) does not have
a consistent length from
stanza to stanza. 3) does
not mimic Poe`s poem.
(1)Unacceptable
Student`s poem either does
not attempt a rhyme
scheme or does not
successfully apply a
patterned rhyme scheme
from stanza to stanza.
Either student did not
understand the concept of
rhyme scheme or did not
attempt to show a pattern
from stanza to stanza.
Little effort was shown to
either apply rhyme scheme
or mimic Poe`s style.
Poem is very sloppy with
many things missing. Poem
does not mimic or parody
Poe`s "The Raven" (or the
original song). It is sloppy
and does not flow or have a
narrative poem (it does not
tell an effective story).
May not have rhyme
scheme, internal rhyme,
meter, or repetition.
Poem may contain one or
more of the following: 1)
No obvious stanzas 2) Not
enough lines (18 to meet
the requirement) 3) poem
does not mimic Poe`s (or
the original song) use of
stanzas 4) No clear pattern
of lines broken up into
stanzas.
There are one or more
spelling or grammatical
errors.
