What is resilience?
Everyone’s lives have ups and downs. Resilience is the ability to bounce back when faced with challenges in your life.
Resilience is also about building strength in communities as well as being able to deal with a crisis. Resilience also comes
from supportive relationships with family members, peers and communities that help people cope.
What’s this all about?
Camden Council is exploring new ways to better serve
its residents.
The new Resilient Families Programme aims to support
families early enough to prevent problems escalating
by focusing on what families need to be resilient,
giving support in the right way, at the right time,
empowering them to improve their own situation by
developing community networks, unlocking alternative
community resources and relooking at the role of public
services. Schools, health, police and the voluntary and
community sector are key partners.
The programme is a partnership led by the Children,
Schools and Families (CSF) Directorate of the Council to
improve the way we support children and families.
Camden’s financial challenge
The Council and our partners are facing a time of reduced
resources, with reductions in the number of staff we
employ and services we buy or provide. The Council is
embarking on huge changes to meet the anticipated
£70m funding gap over the next three years. You can find
out more about the financial challenge here http://bit.ly/1ospnEv

Camden is very fortunate to have a whole range of very
high quality services that support children, young people
and their families. The Resilient Families Programme aims
to make the current system more effective and efficient by:
• making a positive impact on outcomes that matter to
families; and
• making the best use of money and people.
How can the Council work better?
We want to ensure that future support for children and
families focuses on their strengths, equips them with the
skills to bounce back and face future challenges with
confidence, as well as making sure we make the best use
of all the resources available.
The Council has been testing out some new ways of
working with partners, such as Jobcentre Plus and GPs,
to improve outcomes for families with complex needs.
We are using the lessons from this work in the Resilient
Families Programme.
What are the main areas we are focusing on improving?
• clear ways to get the services you need in a
co-ordinated way
• making it clear who can get help and what is
on offer
When will I see a difference?
The programme involves a big transformation
across a number of services, departments and
organisations, so we will need to make changes
gradually. We also want to take time to ensure that
the plans are grounded in evidence and in line with
what residents, staff and service providers tell us.
Some changes are already happening, some will
happen this year and some will take up to 2017
to achieve.
• whole-family approach across all services.
This work will touch on lots of services across the Council
and other organisations.
So what exactly do you have
planned?
We are still at the start of the journey; we know we’d like to:
• review how things currently work by speaking to residents,
service users and staff
• analyse data and information to look at current needs and
future demand
• plan the changes together, and then
• implement the changes.
