NEWS
London Leadership Academy coaching service
We’d like to remind you that the LLA offers a free coaching service for NHS staff in London. We now have 118 registered coaches
on our register, all of whom are trained and accredited to deliver 1:1 coaching in a safe and confidential environment.
Coaching is based on the principle that an individual is ultimately responsible for their lives and the results they are getting. If we
acknowledge that we are responsible for something, it follows that we have power and influence over it. For example, if you are
not getting the results that you want at work, a coach may encourage you to:
•
•
•
Understand the situation more clearly
Develop new ideas or approaches for such situations
Take constructive action that gets you the results you want
Coaching typically consists of 3 – 6 sessions, spread at regular intervals, each lasting 60 – 90 minutes. The aim is for the coach
to help the coachee find their own answers to their issues or challenges. Coaching can cover a whole range of work-related
issues, from developing self-confidence and dealing with people management issues, to working out how to influence across
teams and organisations, or developing better working relationships with colleagues. The great thing about coaching is that it
is tailored to your needs.
To register for a coach, please visit our CoachNet site. Once your registration has been approved, you will be emailed a log-in to
the system for you to search for a coach that meets your criteria.
For further information about the service, please visit our website or email Coaching and Mentoring.
London Leadership Recognition Awards 2015
We’re excited to announce that nominations for the 2015 London Leadership Recognition Awards open on Monday 15 June.
There are nine awards categories for you to nominate yourself or your colleagues for, which are all detailed on our website.
We’ll be looking for amazing and inspirational stories of excellent leadership across the NHS in London, so start thinking now
about who you could nominate!
This will be the third year that London Leadership Academy are running the awards, and each year we are honoured to be able
to showcase such fantastic leadership work. This year, we have invited last year’s winners to take part in the judging process, and
we are looking forward to utilising their unique insights into the impact of winning a Leadership Recognition Award.
Durka Dougal, winner of the 2014 NHS Emerging Leader of the Year, said:
“[Winning] the award made me reflect on just how important it is to nurture and support staff and the huge difference that can
be made to patient care if everyone throughout health and social care did that for those around them. I now realise the huge
value of such awards – not only to recognise people for the work that they do, but also to enable them to recognise the work
that they are doing and the value that it brings for others. It is sometimes too easy to keep doing what you do, but not realising
what an impact it is making or how best to build on this to maximally benefit others.”
If you know someone who deserves recognition for their leadership, whatever their role may be, check our website on Monday
for full details of the nomination process.

Leading Resiliently in Turbulent Times – Barry Oshry’s Human Systems Framework
London Leadership Academy was pleased to hold the first of two workshops on Barry Oshry’s Human Systems Framework on 27
May, delivered by John Watters and Ali Warner. It was well attended by 30 people from across the Leadership and OD community
and received excellent feedback and enquiries around how more people can access this insightful technique.
This experiential workshop introduced participants to Barry Oshry’s key insights on power and leadership and provided a
window to look clearly at the systemic patterns that regularly occur within organisations and which undermine partnership and
effectiveness. The workshop enabled practical exploration of Barry Oshry’s framework, where the participants were divided in
to ‘Tops, Middles, Bottoms and Customers’ to experience conditions, contributions and pitfalls faced when they are in those
positions, how it relates to them on a personal level, and the impacts on the total system.
The second workshop will be held on Friday 3 July and will comprise of a smaller subset of those who attended in May. This
workshop will enable participants to develop a deeper understanding of the framework with a view to applying it in their
workplace. The workshops are designed to provide new insights, practices and tools to shift behaviour and create conditions for
greater partnership and engagement within organisations and the wider health system.
Please note that the July workshop is now full.
Darzi Fellowships – last chance to apply!
This month will be the last opportunity to apply for a “Darzi 7” Fellowship in Clinical Leadership. Fellowship posts are twelve
months in duration and require that time away from normal work or training. Over that time fellows work on a major project
(or in some cases a number of projects) covering service change, quality and safety improvement or leadership capacity building.
Please share this message with clinical colleagues in your organisation who may wish to take advantage of this unique and
valuable opportunity. Recruitment is led locally by different NHS organisations, and advertised via NHS jobs. If you would like
to apply to become a Darzi Fellow, please visit the NHS jobs website and search for ‘Darzi Fellow’. Deadlines vary for individual
projects and will be detailed for each post. In particular, medics in training should be aware of required OOPE timeframes. For
more information about the Darzi Fellowship Programme, please visit our website.
Leading Compassionate Care in Practice
Last year, as part of the drive to develop the leadership of London’s nursing workforce, LLA commissioned the Florence
Nightingale Foundation to run four additional cohorts of their successful programme Leading Compassionate Care in Practice.
The final cohort finished on 20 May, with over 90 participants completing the programme.
The three day programme (one two-day module followed by a one-day module several weeks later) is for bands 6 and 7 nurses,
particularly those working with older people in all settings. It was originally commissioned by the Department of Health across
the country, and received excellent evaluation from both experienced and newly appointed clinical leaders from acute specialties,
community services, mental health, emergency departments, hospices and care homes.
As with the original programmes, our nurses all reported increases in their knowledge, understanding and practical application
of the 6Cs; courage and confidence to lead; and ability to change practice. They said they felt reinvigorated, and particularly
welcomed being brought back in touch with why they entered nursing originally.
We look forward to receiving a final report on how the participants found the programme and its impact on them, but the
immediate feedback on the final day was very positive

L&OD network
We held a successful meeting of our LOD network on Monday 1 June. This largely self-facilitating network hosted over 30
people over the course of the day, and covered two key topics in depth.
Richard French-Lowe, from Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, kindly stepped in to facilitate the meeting, which
kicked off with a discussion about the suite of national leadership core programmes, namely Edward Jenner, Mary Seacole,
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Nye Bevan. Mark Humble of LLA outlined the content, duration and eligibility criteria of
the programmes, and presented participation statistics across London. We also heard from a number of current and recent core
programmes participants who shared their experiences of the programmes. Thanks to Tom Fynmore, Kate Baillie, Anna Eastgate
and Gillian Smith for being willing volunteers! We were also pleased to welcome Stacey Lalley and Sam Peate from the NHS
Leadership Academy who introduced the Academy’s future approach to core programmes, including a new funding model
which retains a nationally funded subsidy for places, but introduces a charge for participants or their employers. Delegates were
interested to hear the direction of travel and were keen to hear details of the future offer and the fee/benefit structure. LLA will
circulate the details as soon as we receive them. For more information on core programme application deadlines, please see the
Book Now section below.
In the afternoon the group turned to the national Compassion in Practice workstream on compassionate leadership, and in
particular the Culture of Care barometer. Bronagh Scott, Deputy Chief Nurse for the London region, Anne-Marie Rafferty,
Professor of Nursing policy at Kings College London, and Paul Taylor from the Do OD team, led a range of fascinating and timely
discussions and presentations on work in this area. The report is available on the NHS England website.
If you are an OD practitioner in the NHS in London and would like to join the network, please contact Charmane Williams.

Post-Graduate Certificate in Organisational Change Management (Cohort 2)
Applications are now being accepted for the second cohort of the PG Certificate in Organisational Change Management,
starting in Autumn 2015. The aim of this programme, which is delivered by the University of Southampton, is to develop internal
capacity and capability in organisation development (OD) and change leadership.
One of the current participants on the programme said:
“The course has provided a solid foundation to the theoretic concepts and issues of organisational change management,
combined with practical application within the work setting. The standard of teaching is very high and consists of taught sessions
and case study group exercises designed to equip the student with the understanding, skills and techniques typically required of
a competent OD practitioner.”
Applicants will need to demonstrate experience of leading and facilitating change in the NHS and be working in a role, which
will enable them to apply the learning from the programme. The programme will take place over 10 months and will comprise
of four modules with action learning sets (all taking place in London), written assignments and a work-based project. Whilst the
bulk of the programme costs are being met by the London LETBs, we will be asking for a contribution of £1500 per participant
to cover the remaining costs.
The closing date for applications is Tuesday 30 June 2015.
For further information and to request an application pack, please contact Runa Begum.

Reflective practice space – supervision in an organisational context
There are a few final places still remaining for the interactive supervision event LLA are holding with Robin Shohet and Erik de
Haan on Wednesday 15 July.
This event, which is being run as part of International Supervision Week, is aimed at line managers, educational and clinical
supervisors, OD leads, and anyone else who would like to explore what reflective practice means in the context of their work.
The event will be interactive and experiential, exploring the difference between clinical supervision and organisational supervision
and experiencing reflective practice through the seven eyed supervision model. Participants will come away from the event with
some techniques to help them stand back and reflect, discover new ways of learning from difficult situations, and to have better
conversations with patients, clients and colleagues.
To register your interest for this event, which will take place from 2 – 5pm at a central London venue, please contact Charmane
Williams. Places are limited and priority will be given to people who are not trained coaches or mentors but are interested in
finding out more about supervision/reflective practice, and are willing to experience it.
