“We build successful futures for all - one student at a time.”
From the Superintendent...
Welcome to the
2016-2017 School
Year Shorians!
More change than a
parking meter! That
could easily be the
theme for Lake Shore
Public Schools as we
enter the new school
year. While change

and evolution can
always bring along
with it some bumps in the road, we are
confident that what we have in our future
will be of great benefit to our community
and most importantly our students. It’s been
a busy summer here at Lake Shore and we
are eager to show off all the improvements.
The progress of the successful bond
passage is already visible throughout the
district. New technology is being installed
every day providing our staff and students
with state of the art instructional
opportunities and transforming the way we
operate in the classroom. Architects and
engineers have been working throughout the
district to design the first phase of
construction and building improvements,
slated to begin in the spring of 2017. This
warm summer has been a great reminder of
how important air conditioned classrooms
will be for our students and their learning
environment. This will be the final year we
have to worry about that! We will continue
to meet biweekly with our architects,
engineers, construction managers, and
financial advisors to ensure we are on time
and under budget with this opportunity to
improve our schools and be impeccable
financial stewards of our community.

This year Lake Shore teamed
up with Anchor Bay Schools to
host the Summer World Culture
Camp. Participation in this camp
was amazing with 118 students,
10 American teachers, and 12 Chinese teachers. The
camp featured morning classes where the students were
able to learn about each others’ cultures and language,
and then they enjoyed field trips to various places
around Southeast Michigan.
The real highlight of this camp is the hosting
experience that families have by taking in a Chinese
students for two of the
three weeks of camp.
Host families really

during this camp.
Kindergarten thru 8th grade students and their
families were able to explore hands-on activities, camp
themes, and family engagement through the exploration
of science, technology, engineering, art and math. The
three week camp had 67 students pre-registered and a
day when 118 Cultural Camp students participated in
activities. Students not only visited
different stations to create and make
amazing projects, they also enjoyed a
free lunch through the summer meals
program.

Joan Grassi is the principal of Violet Elementary. “I am very honored to be in this new position. Some of you may know me as a teacher, with seventeen
years as part of the Lake Shore family. I consider Violet to be my home having taught first, second and fifth grades. I continually strive to be a model of life long
learning for my students.”
Mrs. Grassi was a mentor to other teachers and one of the leaders of the School Improvement Team at Violet. She holds bachelors and masters degrees from
Wayne State University and an Education Specialist Degree in Administration from Oakland University. Mrs. Grassi also participated in the Galileo Teacher
Leadership Academy, which promotes teacher leadership skills.
Mrs. Grassi plans to continue the educational excellence at Violet. She says, “I look forward to working closely with our entire staff to ensure the absolute best
experience for every student and family at Violet. We have high expectations for student learning and pride ourselves on creating a safe, trustworthy, and
respectful environment for all students.”
Janelle Bross is the principal of Lake Shore High School. The 2016-2017 school year will mark her tenth year in the district. She has served as a teacher,
coach, club advisor, as well as the assistant principal at the high school for the past five years. She is eager to take on this new role as principal and get the school
year started.
Mrs. Bross attended Michigan State University. She graduated with a degree in Social Studies, a minor in Psychology and received her teacher certification
from MSU as well. She continued her education in East Lansing and earned both her Masters and Administrative Certification.
Janelle’s mother (as well as four aunts and uncles) all grew up in a house on Visnaw and are proud graduates of Lake Shore High School, so St. Clair Shores has
always felt like home. Mrs. Bross is proud to be a Shorian and looks forward to continuing to serve the students, parents, staff, and Lake Shore community.
Mrs. Bross loves going to Lake Shore events, so look for her in the stands at sporting events, in the crowd at school concerts, and feel free to send her invites to
events
in the Lake Shore community. “I believe that school should be a safe, welcoming, mentally rigorous, fun place to be,” says Mrs. Bross. “As always the

staff at the high school will work very hard to ensure all students are successful. I hope to continue fostering the sense of community and school pride that has
been invigorated at Lake Shore over the past few years.”
Rich Popp is the Dean of Students and head football coach at Lake Shore High
School. The Dean of Students is a new position at the high school. Mr. Popp’s major
responsibilities will be attendance and discipline issues.
Mr. Popp brings experience to this position after teaching for twenty-eight years and
coaching for over thirty. He says that his first priority is to get to know the students, staff
and parents at Lake Shore, because developing strong relationships begins with the building
of trust.
“I am extremely excited to join the incredible staff, students and families of Lake
Shore. You will come to find that I am a family first person, and I incorporate that into all

There was a great turn out for the annual alumni tour of the
high school. This summer, the group was largely made up of
1966 graduates celebrating their 50th class reunion. The tour
is open to anyone who would like to take a trip down memory
lane. The next big alumni event will be the Alumni Tent at the
homecoming football game on September 30th.

Summer Technology Updates New Year, New Devices
It has been a busy summer for the Technology Department.
Using the five year replacement plan as a guide, we’ve replaced the
following computers:
 The computers in a lab at LSHS in room 106
 Lab and library computers at Kennedy
 Main office computers in five school buildings
 Teacher computers at Kennedy and LSHS were replaced with laptops
 The SuccessMaker lab at Kennedy was replaced with Chrome
BOXES – a device that runs the Chrome operating system (like a
chromebook) but has the form factor of a PC.
New computers are
waiting for learners! They

electronics. Extreme switches were installed in all of our buildings to replace

equipment, so we will receive a rebate of more than 50% of the purchase price.
These new switches are a critical component of the network infrastructure upgrades that will
make our One to One (1:1) initiative successful. A 1:1 environment allows for seamless integration
of technology into every subject area and creates opportunities for students to collaborate, work on
real world problems and projects, and show what they’ve learned in a variety of ways. Prior to
implementation of 1:1 computing, staff members will receive training on how the devices work and
how best to use them in the classroom. Districts with a well planned implementation of 1:1
computing have seen increases in student engagement and scores on standardized tests. With
devices on hand at all times, teachers can take advantage of new learning technologies and online

You’ll see many new faces throughout the district this year as
well as some familiar faces in different roles. As we searched for
the best candidates in each position, the primary factor in hiring
was always what positive impact will these new staff members
make for our children.
It may seem to be an obvious
consideration, but all too often school systems forget to keep “first
things first” which is always the well being and educational
preparation of our students. The leaders we have hired throughout
the district and in the classrooms this year will compliment an
already exceptional staff, while bringing in a fresh perspective
and elevating the performance of all of us. We are very excited to
have these new members of our staff and look forward to
introducing them to you.
You’ll find new initiatives throughout the district from a new
reading series at the elementary levels to anti-bullying programs
such as “Defeat the Label” and “Challenge Day” at Kennedy
Middle School and Lake Shore High School. KMS will also have
a therapy dog visiting the school. Our staff will continue to hone
their skills both in terms of instructional strategies and curricular
development as well as interaction with students and guiding
students in the right direction with their interaction with their
peers. Throughout this next school year, we will be working
closely with our technology consultant, Communication by
Design, as we prepare to implement a 1:1 initiative for our
students. Transforming how we operate in the classroom to meet
the rapidly changing demands our students will face as the exit
school and enter the work force will be a priority for Lake Shore
Public Schools.
To begin the discussion on how this may look, please join me
Monday, September 12th, at 7:00pm in the Lake Shore High
School Auditorium for the viewing of the film Most Likely to
Succeed. This critically acclaimed film gives us an understanding
for the need for change and some ideas on how we may get
there. If nothing else, it will give us an opportunity to have some
thoughtful discussion on the direction our schools are headed to
best prepare our students for their future.
Finally, with all this change taking place, it’s important to
preserve our storied history here at Lake Shore. We have been
working over the past few years to establish a Hall of Fame to
honor all the great people and accomplishments that have taken
place and we hope by the year’s end to present a final proposal on
what the Hall will honor and how it will take shape. Please join
me in this opportunity to create a timeless dedication to all those
that have made Lake Shore what it is today.
In closing, whether it is your first year at Lake Shore Public
Schools, or your final year, we are excited for what this year will
produce. The excitement of a new college admission, a first day
of school, an A+ on a test, or a championship athletic team, this
year is certain to bring the excitement and enthusiasm that can
only be found at Lake Shore. I am proud and honored to be a part
of the Shorian Nation and look forward to sharing these great
experiences and more with you during the 2016-2017 school
year. Best wishes on much success, I am certain there will be
much to celebrate.
Reminders for Parents
If you’ve changed your address, home or
cell phone numbers, please notify your
child’s school. Having the correct contact
information is very important, especially if
we need to contact you because of an urgent
matter.
If you’re not sure whether your child’s
school has the correct contact information
for you, please call the school and doublecheck. Working together, we can ensure the
safety and welfare of our students.

Question or Concern?
From time to time, issues of concern and
questions arise from parents and other
members of the community. Here at Lake
Shore, we will work hard to resolve issues
in a timely manner. It is important to help
this process along by following the outline
below.
1. Go to the source. For example, if the
issue is relative to the classroom, please
speak with the teacher; similarly, if it is an
issue to do with athletics, please speak with
the coach.
2. If you still have concerns, please speak
with the appropriate building administrator,
e.g. Assistant Principal and/or Principal
about classroom and other related issues,
the Athletic Director for athletic issues.
3. The next level would be to contact the
Administrative Center where your
concerns would be assessed by the
Superintendent or designee.
4. Ultimately if you are still concerned,
you have the opportunity to make a
presentation to the Board and the Board
will determine a direction and/or decision.
That is our Board’s policy for questions
and concerns. We believe that by following
the outline, we can best address any issues
that may arise in a timely fashion.

day for Lake Shore staff, administration, board members
and community members to support the Foundation and
Lake Shore students.
The Foundation was established in 1986 for the purpose
of directing charitable contributions to benefit all Lake
Shore Public Schools students. The golf outing is open to

Who has played the biggest role in guiding you: My parents have always been very supportive of me and my
endeavors without being overbearing about them and making me feel as if I have to perform well for them to be
proud of me. A big part of why I was able to get to where I am now was because of their belief that I would always
do my best because it was what I wanted to do, and not because they wanted to make me, and their unconditional
support through that.
Salutatorian Elise Tomaszewski

The most important thing I’ve learned in school is to believe in myself. There have been
so many times throughout my entire life where I didn’t think I would be good enough. I
was always worried about what others thought of me and high school taught me to trust
in my own abilities. Once I started believing in myself, I found that success was soon to
follow and everyone around me was incredibly supportive. While I still have potential to
grow in my own revelation, I’m pleased to say that even if I make a mistake, I can grow
from it and still be proud of myself with whatever I take on.

greatest part about her is that she has always been supportive and trusted me with everything. The path to
graduating was not always an easy one, as I’m sure many of my peers can relate to, and my mom helped me

Special Homecoming Surprise
Kindergartener Aiden Mulvaine had a
huge surprise during a Friday morning
assembly. His dad, Navy Chief Petty Officer
Brian Mulvaine, was stationed with Riverine
Squadron 10 in Djibouti Africa for a year.
While Aiden was on stage with his class, an
announcement was made that there was a
very special guest in the audience. Aiden’s
dad walked across the stage to surprise his
son.
Chief Petty Officer Mulvaine has been in
the Navy for 16 years and this was his sixth
deployment. His unit provided maritime
security and protection for U.S. ships
entering and exiting the area surrounding
the port of Djibouti. Djibouti is in the Horn of
Africa region bordering Somalia.
Students
built
motorized Ferris wheels

special presentation from
Bricks 4 Kidz. Students
worked in groups and had Lake Shore vs. Lakeview Alumni Soccer Game
The alumni soccer game that was held in May was a huge
to follow instructions in
order for the projects to success! Over 260 fans were there to root on their favorite
players. The final score was 2-2.
be successful.
Shorians won the Best Band Award in the SCS Memorial Day Parade
The Marching Shorians earned this honor over the two other Saint Clair Shores
Bands, two Detroit Bands and Warren De LaSalle band. Thank you to all the fans and
parents who cheered them on!
Congratulations Caitlin Beirne
who signed her Letter of Intent
with Indiana Tech for their

Violet Principals
Mr. Kennedy, Mrs.
Netschke, and Mrs.
Grassi all have one
thing in common…
they have held the title
of Violet Elementary Principal. Mrs. Grassi will begin as
principal for the 2016-17 school year. Photo above Students surprised Mrs. Netschke in June with a “flash mob”
as a final farewell after working in education for over 30
years. Students danced to two songs outside and then went
into the gym where the entire student body sang and signed
“The Irish Blessing Song.” It was amazing!!
Elementary Students Perform Aladdin Kids
Rodgers' Drama Club did a great job performing Aladdin
Kids. Students performed for the entire school and had an
evening show for the community.
