What is Zero Waste and why is it important? Zero Waste means that we do not put anything in to the Landfill. We using recycling, reuse and composting UCOP has mandated that every UC campus be at Zero Waste by 2020. UCI is currently recycling and composting 80% of all the solid waste. Event Waste is estimated at 5-7% of the solid waste on campus. 95% of all the waste generated at a traditional event is sent to landfill What can we recycle? Zero Waste Events Goal: Divert 90+% of waste away from landfills Determine the locations and number of Zero Waste Stations Order Zero Waste stations from Facilities Recruit and train volunteers to work the event Notify event participants about recycling efforts Provide signage to educate guests UCI Facilities Management works closely with students and organizations to achieve “zero-waste” at large events held on campus & create awareness 2012 Zero-Waste Event Results Homecoming (Jan. 28th) 5000 people: 74% TEDxUCIrvine (Mar. 3rd) 200 people: 96% Celebrate UCI/Wayzgoose (April 21st) 4000 people: 95% Reggaefest (June 8th) 2000 people: 98% Staff Assembly Picnic (Aug. 31st) 4500 people: 95% Dodgeball (Sept. 25th) 5000 people: 85% JDRF- Walk the Cure (November 4th) 6,000: 90% With the help and cooperation of volunteers as “trash talkers,” event-goers are assisted with source-separation.
