Chief of Police (Full Time Position)
The City of Miles is accepting applications for the position of Chief of Police. Applications will be
accepted until the position is filled. Applications and Personal History Statements may be picked up
in person at Miles City Hall, 110 Robinson St., Miles, TX from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday
through Friday, excluding holidays. Applications and Personal History Statements may be requested

The City of Miles is located on U. S. Highway 67, approximately 17 miles northeast of San Angelo
in the southwest corner of Runnels County. The total population reported in the 2010 U.S. Census is
829 residents. The largest employer in the city is the Miles Independent School District.
Requirements:
The successful applicant:
1. Must be at least 21 years of age
2. Hold a current Texas Peace Officer license in good standing issued by the Texas Commission on
Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
3. Have a minimum of five years’ successful experience as a full-time Texas Peace Officer in a patrol
officer or comparable assignment.
4. Have at minimum a high school diploma or GED
5. Must hold a valid Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record
6. Must be able to work any shift, including nights, weekends and holidays
7. Must be physically fit to perform the functions of a patrol officer
8. Must possess excellent communications skills, both orally and in writing
9. Must possess excellent problem-solving skills
10. Must pass a rigorous background investigation and oral interview
11. Must be willing to maintain an “on-call” status after hours
12. Must reside or agree to establish residence upon selection within or near enough to the City of
Miles to respond to a primary recall for service within a ten (10) minute response time while driving
at the posted speed limit.
13. Must demonstrate proficiency in traffic and criminal law enforcement
14. Must demonstrate the ability to work diligently and show proficiency under minimal direct
supervision.
15. Must demonstrate a willingness to establish and maintain productive working relationships with
local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the area.
15. Must demonstrate a willingness to be involved in community events and organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Advanced or Master Peace Officer License by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
(TCOLE)
2. A minimum of three years of successful experience as an agency administrator and/or
administrative/management level law enforcement supervisor in a law enforcement agency in
Texas
3. A Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university
Job Description:
The position is both administrative and first line, as the ideal candidate will have the ability to
balance the administrative requirements of the department with the demands of a first line officer, i.e.
managing calls for service, traffic enforcement, investigative duties, the enforcement of all laws and
ordinances, and all other duties as assigned.
The principle duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Performs patrol duties throughout the City of Miles in a vehicle, or on foot, recognizing signs of
criminal activity, and deterring such activity.
2. Conducts initial criminal investigations by securing and controlling crime scenes, locating and
interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, gathering evidence, .
3. Performs traffic enforcement and accident investigations.
4. Makes arrests for violations of the law.
5. Responds to calls for service, both of the criminal nature and the non-criminal nature.
6. Completes timely written reports that are clear, complete, and concise.
7. Serves as bailiff for the Municipal Court
8. Assists the public with both criminal and non-criminal matters.
9. Serves as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City
10. Represents the Miles Police Department and the City of Miles at meetings and conferences at the
local, regional, and state level.
11 Performs other duties and fulfills responsibilities as assigned.
Compensation:
Salary range is from $42,000 to $45,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will be placed on a one year probationary period.
Health insurance is provided through TML, dental and vision insurance provided for the employee.

History:
The Miles Police Department has been operated as a part-time police department for approximately
four years. Due to the successes of the department, the department is moving forward into a full-time,
24 hour per day level of service to the community. Two paid part-time patrol officers, and two
reserve per need, specialty officers support the full-time officer.
The Miles Police Department is small in number, but equips its officers well. The Miles Police
Department utilizes COPSync ™ for most department documentation, low mileage and well
equipped patrol units, including tire deflation spikes, late model audio and video recording
equipment, and state of the art land mobile radio systems complete with in-car repeaters that function
in tandem with portable radio units assigned to each officer, ECW’s (TASER), and the latest in radar
and LIDAR technology.
