Beyond Base 10: A Math Adventure

Have you ever wondered about our number system? Who invented it? Why does it work? What
system did other civilizations use? And why is Base 10 the surviving number system?
In this class we will investigate the structure of our number system and analyze alternate number
systems. We will also look at applications of other number bases in areas such as computers and
electricity, and examine the historical foundations of place value systems.
Come explore Roman numerals, Base 5, the Babylonians and Base 60, Base 2, and the Mayans and Base
20. Learn how to change bases, compute with different numeral symbols, and perform operations in
different bases.
Parents – The study of number systems is analogous to understanding the structure of one’s native
language by studying a foreign language. Participants will come away with a broad understanding of
our number system and a deeper understanding of algorithms.
Students should be proficient in whole number operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division.
