PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The AGM held earlier this month was reasonably
well attended and after some follow up we now
have a new committee for this year. The Education
evenings are being organised by Penny and Mary and
the Competitions by Ivor. I am especially pleased
that Dave Lester has agreed to take on the role of
Vice President and that Matt Landy will be Club
Secretary for the year. I look forward to working
with the committee to make the year’s program
interesting and enjoyable for all of us.
On behalf of the Club I attended the WAPF AGM
in Kalamunda on 7 February. It was interesting to
gain some insight into the running of this
organisation and we welcomed Kingsley Klau, from
the Rockingham Photographic Club, as the new
President.
Michael Taylor from the Busselton Camera Club
gave a presentation on the Interclub Event for this
year. He gave details about the program including
the visits, mostly early morning, they were planning
for some photography during the event. As you are
aware we are planning to take part this year and we
have established a sub-committee to organise our
entries to be sent in by mid-July. I have sent out a
message asking for your images for consideration
for inclusion in the 15 entries we can put forward.

Theme for 2016 is “Intimate Landscape”
www.inmyview.net.au
This competition is a great opportunity to find
an intimate landscape that tells a great story.
1, Register your interest now.
2, Select or take a great image with a strong
story, The Intimate Landscape isn’t a big vista
nor is it a macro image, but an image of a
subject in the area somewhere in between. In
the context of this competition, it might best
be defined as an image that is relatively simple
in its composition but powerful in its story
telling.
3 submit before the end of February to take
advantage of the early bird entry fee.
This competition combines the skills of
photographers with the skills of writers and

EDUCATION NIGHTS
EDUCATION OFFICERS’ REPORT
At the AGM Mary and Penny were able to elicit
from the group a number of topics to feature on
Education Nights. They included panoramas and
how to take them and then merge in photoshop;
focus stacking; printing and how to prepare an
image for printing externally or printing on your
home computer; colour management, types of
paper to use, calibrating etc. Another evening of
BYO images for a group critique was also popular.
Outings and tutorials focusing on the competition
subjects was also suggested.
Following the AGM Paul and Jan gave a short
presentation on preparing images for competition
night, which was enlightening. Jan spoke from the
judge’s perspective: the image needs to stand out,
be different, sharp etc as opposed to a chocolate
box type of snap shot. She suggested putting a
white border of 3 pixels around an image so that
it stands out against the black background of the
projector. Also suggested getting folders ready at
the beginning of each year for the subject shots.
Try to only expect 2 or 3 good shots from each
shoot, then flag these to work on, leave them for a
few days and then go back with fresh eyes. Above
all don’t rush, take your time to only select images
with impact and these will win GOLD!
Paul will continue with the Tuesday group and
more details will come.

COMPETITION NIGHTS
COMPETITION DIRECTOR’S REPORT FOR
16 FEBRUARY 2016
The subject for March is: Silhouette –the image of
a person, animal, object or scene represented as a
solid shape of a single colour, usually black.
May I again mention that when using Foam Core
for the backing of the prints, please use 3mm thickness. It is very difficult to mount and remove prints
from the display board using 5mm.
Ivor Metlitzky
Being a fairly well defined Subject for Febuary, and
the first competition of the year, entries were higher
than normal in both Print and Digital Images.
The judge for the evening was Glen Moralee who
repeated his last year’s good analytical approach. The
WAPF judges course seems to have spawned some
very acceptable judges.
SET SUBJECTS FOR 2016
The subjects for the monthly competitions have been set by the
Committee and are as follows:
Month
Subject
March
Silhouette –the image of a person, animal, object or scene represented as a solid
shape of a single colour, usually black.
Triptych – is a common style used in modern commercial artwork. The photographs
are usually arranged with a plain border between them. The work may consist of
separate images that are variants on a theme, or may be one larger split into three.
This can be done digitally also.
April
May
Double exposure – a photograph composing of two exposures that either compliment or contrast each other. Images ideally should be exposed in camera as opposed
to two exposures blended in editing software. For example: a cat double exposed with
a tiger, a person smoking and a skeleton.
June
From a height – Not for the acrophobic! A photograph taken from an aerial or
vertical perspective and looking down such as from walkover, top of a building, bridge
etc. An image taken from standing height will not do.
July
A season – capturing the essence or a key element of a specific season.
August
Mirrors – pictures that involves the reflection of an image bouncing in at least two
other surfaces
September
Rear-curtain flash – An image making use of the rear-curtain flash feature in the
camera settings.
October
High speed – a photograph of an event that would not normally be noticed by the
human eye captured in still motion. The image may be of a natural or staged event with
natural or supplementary lighting. Areas of interest should not portray motion blur
but rather be static such as a water droplet caught is space etc.
The mundane – a photograph of common item, common items or event that would
normally be considered mundane. The subject or scene could be placed in a studio,
staged or in real life. Think shopping isles, coins, driveways etc.
November
