Kids College is our summer enrichment series which offers unique workshops for rising 2nd – 12th graders that are designed to teach new skills, develop new interests and hobbies, and explore future career opportunities. Included in this brochure are all the program descriptions with dates, times and ages. Please read everything thoroughly as you make selections, and carefully complete all the necessary paperwork. Many of our programs have limited enrollment, and applications are processed according to the date they are received. PLEASE NOTE: We have courses that will be held OFFSITE… not at the Workforce Center… for some classes, you are to take your child to the offsite location and pick them up there. For others, the Kids College shuttle will be available to students. All those courses are well-marked in the catalog, so please make sure you and your child know where their favorite classes are going to be held and how they are going to get there! So come explore and discover your favorite way to express your inner art muse! Few people know that Dr. Seuss dabbled in 3-D art. What started as drawings and took the form of sculpture became known as his Unorthodox Collection of Taxidermy; three-dimensional Seussian creatures from his imagination. In this class, children will create their own creatures based on observations of extinct, mythological, and modern-day animals, and their imaginations. Here is the perfect class for you. You will have the opportunity to write and illustrate your very own book. (You can bring a story you have already started or you can begin a new one.)YOUR book will be published in color and in hard-bound format through a company affiliated with Barnes and Noble. You will receive one copy of your book, compliments of Kids College. More copies can be purchased for grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. What a great present your book would make! Learn basic brush strokes while painting on a natural gourd. Leave with a beautiful and functional birdhouse to decorate your backyard or porch. An extreme home makeover for your bird families! ` 5 Illuminated Initials Painted Paper Collage Illumination was an art form from the middle ages used to decorate the pages of books. Pages were hand decorated with ornate lettering, decorative boarders, and simple imagery. Bright colors and silver and gold leafing made the pages seem to “light up.” Students will get to illuminate their own initials in this class using gold and silver metallic paints and imagery that defines themselves. Children will create personal and individualized paper collages like their favorite children’s book artists such as Leo Leoni, Eric Carle, and Lois Elhert. Children will enjoy the freedom of hand painting and texturizing their own decorative papers, which, after learning simple drawing skills, will be cut out into one of a kind imagery. It involves the curling and manipulating of thin paper strips to “draw” a dimensional image. This class will bring a touch of modernity to this traditional craft. Instead of going all the way to London, KC is having their very own Olympics! Did you know that at the first Olympics, there was only one race and that the man who won, ran the race naked! Clothing will be required for the KC Olympics where we will have some very unusual events. Sewing machines and all materials needed will be provided (but students are welcome to bring their own favorite fabric, if desired). Students will learn how to become trendsetters by designing their own one-of-a-kind clothes and then show off their glamorous creations on the catwalk in an exciting fashion show on our final day of class. SAFE SITTERS learn what to do when a child stops breathing or chokes, safety for the sitter, how to call for emergency help, babysitting business skills, basic child care skills (diapering, feeding, etc.), and how to entertain children and keep them safe. Students will take a “walking field trip” to the Children’s Center to practice their new skills with infants through school age children. A Kids College Favorite ! Learn another way to communicate… with your hands! Sign language has proven to be an amazingly valuable communication tool, not only for the deaf and hard of hearing population, but for all children of various ages and abilities. Master Barrett Crook will be teaching children a combination of techniques from Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kung Fu, Muy Thai, Hapkido and Jujitsu as well as crime prevention and awareness. We will spend a half-day on campus identifying rocks, using candy bars as our guide! We will learn how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks all form, and how we can identify rocks, using their textures as our guide. After a day of playing with our food, and rocks, we will spend a day in the field exploring rocks at outcrops near Richmond, VA. Ever wanted to go on your own fossil finding adventure? After spending a half-day on campus learning how to identify fossils, how fossils are preserved, and even making our own “modern” fossil, we will spend a day in the field on our own fossil adventure. The field trip will be along the banks of the James River in Surry, VA, where we will comb the beaches for fossil finds, and learn about how we can interpret the past through studying fossils. Clams, scallops, barnacles, and coral are too, especially when we can learn about a time when much of Virginia was covered with a warm, tropical sea. We will spend one half-day on campus learning how to identify fossils, how fossils are preserved, and how we can use fossils and their placement to help us interpret the geologic past of Virginia. Then we will spend one day in the field exploring the geologic history of Virginia’s Coastal Plain as can be seen along the banks of the James River in Surry, VA, using fossils as our guide. High Tech Treasure Hunt Dates: Session I: July 18 Session II: July 26 Times: 8:30a-12:30p Ages: Rising 4th – 12th graders Instructor: Neil Clark Tuition: $20 It’s a race against time and fierce competitors to find hidden clues using your handy global positioning system (GPS), overcome thrilling challenges, and be the first to find the “National Treasure”! This event will provide instruction and hands-on application of GPS technology while engaging wits and nerves in a safe but fun geographical adventure. This workshop is offered in partnership with the Southampton County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension. ` 12 PIXELS (Processing Images Xtremely Exciting Life Skill) Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Dates: Times: Ages: Instructor: Tuition: July 18 1:00p – 5:00p Rising 4th – 12th graders Neil Clark $20 Rock Hounds Dates: Times: Ages: Instructor: Tuition: From major motion pictures (think Nemo), to hand-held smartphones and flat screen televisions, to CAT scans and MRIs, digital images are EVERYWHERE! Learn to capture, modify, design, and analyze digital images using freely available software. Make custom greeting cards, create silly web pics, and determine whether or not a tumor is operable using tools readily at your disposal. The next day, we will spend the day along the banks of the James River near Richmond, VA, exploring rock outcrops and learning about the geologic history of Virginia. Millions of people are spending hours and hours playing computer games, a multibillion dollar industry. Military and medical fields are full of computer technologies. You'd best be on your way to get on-board. In this class, you will use a scripting language to design and program your own computer game. Learn the bits, bytes, and basics that can jumpstart you into a promising career path. This workshop is offered in partnership with the Southampton County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension. Riverkeeper Jeff Turner will be your captain on a special eco-cruise on the rivers for a firsthand look at the beauty of one of our most precious local resources. Do you like getting your hands dirty? Are you curious about how your spit breaks down food? Have you ever wondered why boats float … not sink? They're crawly. They're bitey. They're millions strong and an essential part of life on earth. There are more different kinds of insects in the world than all other living things combined. Some are so small that we need a microscope to see them and others are so large they won't fit in a coffee can. Join us in discovering how to identify, collect, display, and present information about insects (and other select arthropods) and learn about the economic and ecological importance of these crawly critters. The adventure will begin in the computer lab where students will research their career. They will uncover the education needed and the salary of their desired path. Students will receive a monthly paycheck and then go visit a room with 15 "life" stations. Examples of the stations include: pay their taxes, buy clothes for themselves, and kids, buy cell phones, rent or buy a house, pay back student loans, visit the lottery table (which could be good or bad luck), and pay for childcare. The program is designed to teach kids about real life as they enter a new phase of their own life. They will begin to understand decision making, problem solving and how your education will affect your income. Going from the “senior” class at the elementary school to the “new kids on the block” can be both exciting and scary for rising 6th graders… but what if, before they went, these pre-teens had access to a crystal ball that would reveal some of the secrets of their new school? Students who sign up for this session will get an exclusive behind-thescenes sneak peek of what they really want to know… How long will it take me to get from one class to another? How do I get one of those locks open? What are the older kids like? Will the teachers review anything with me or will I have to learn all new stuff from scratch? By the end of this session, THESE new 6th graders will have the inside scoop on what to do, how to do it, and where to go! (Shhh… they’ll even leave with a preview of each of the subjects taught!) This workshop is offered in partnership with the Southampton County and Isle of Wight office of Virginia Cooperative Extension. Students will participate in a book study and work collaboratively learning numerous SAT vocabulary and writing strategies. The book study will enable students to learn new vocabulary in context, discuss and reflect upon new words & their meanings, and create connections to the world around them. Internet resources used in this class will also help students practice what they have learned. Students will take a several mile paddle down one of our beautiful area rivers. Tour selection will depend on river levels and conditions. Session 1: Session 2: Session 3: Session 4: Kayak Kids – Level III Pre-requisite: Level II or equivalent experience Students in this Level III session will take one of two tours: an eight mile paddle from Joyner’s Bridge back to Barrett’s Landing on the Blackwater River OR a ten mile paddle on the Nottoway River. Tour selection will depend on river levels and conditions. Participants must be physically able to complete an 8-10 mile tour on their own.
