Welcome!
Kids College is our summer enrichment series which offers unique workshops for rising 2nd – 12th graders that are
designed to teach new skills, develop new interests and hobbies, and explore future career opportunities.
Included in this brochure are all the program descriptions with dates, times and ages. Please read everything
thoroughly as you make selections, and carefully complete all the necessary paperwork. Many of our programs have
limited enrollment, and applications are processed according to the date they are received.
PLEASE NOTE: We have courses that will be held OFFSITE… not at the Workforce Center… for some classes, you
are to take your child to the offsite location and pick them up there. For others, the Kids College shuttle will be
available to students. All those courses are well-marked in the catalog, so please make sure you and your child
know where their favorite classes are going to be held and how they are going to get there!
If you need additional information or have any questions, please contact the Kids College office at 757-569-6700 for
assistance. Thank you for your interest in Kids College and we look forward to another outstanding, fun-filled summer!
See you this summer!

The Arts & Expression
Little artists will have fun jumping from one unexpected project
to the next. Children will be exposed to different mediums and
forms of art in this class, from drawing to watercolor, to
printmaking and clay. So come explore and discover your
favorite way to express your inner art muse!
Few people know that Dr. Seuss dabbled
in 3-D art. What started as drawings and
took the form of sculpture became
known as his Unorthodox Collection of
Taxidermy; three-dimensional Seussian
creatures from his imagination. In this
class, children will create their own
creatures based on observations of
extinct, mythological, and modern-day
animals, and their imaginations.

Illuminated Initials
Painted Paper Collage
Illumination was an art form from the middle ages used to
decorate the pages of books. Pages were hand decorated with
ornate lettering, decorative boarders, and simple imagery.
Bright colors and silver and gold leafing made the pages seem to
“light up.” Students will get to illuminate their own initials in
this class using gold and silver metallic paints and imagery that
defines themselves.
Children will create
personal and individualized
paper collages like their
favorite children’s book
artists such as Leo Leoni,
Eric Carle, and Lois Elhert.
Children will enjoy the
freedom of hand painting
and texturizing their own
decorative papers, which,
after learning simple
drawing skills, will be cut out into one of a kind imagery.

Let's face it. Millions of people are spending hours and hours
playing computer games, a multibillion dollar industry. Military and
medical fields are full of computer
technologies. You'd best be on your
way to get on-board. In this class, you
will use a scripting language to design
and program your own computer
game. Learn the bits, bytes, and
basics that can jumpstart you into a
promising career path. This
workshop is offered in partnership
with the Southampton County office
of Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Riverkeeper Jeff Turner will be your captain on a special
eco-cruise on the rivers for a firsthand look at the beauty
of one of our most precious local resources. This
workshop will be offered four times over
the course of Kids College 2012. This
workshop is offered in partnership with
the Blackwater Nottoway Riverkeeper.

They're creepy. They're crawly. They're bitey. They're
millions strong and an essential part of life on earth. There are
more different kinds of insects in the world than all other living
things combined. Some are so small that we need a microscope
to see them and others are so large they won't fit in a coffee
can. Join us in discovering how to identify, collect, display, and
present information about insects (and other select
arthropods) and learn about the economic and ecological
importance of these crawly critters. This workshop is offered
in partnership with the Southampton County office of
Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Students will experience "life" in a fun financial
session. The adventure will begin in the computer lab
where students will research their career. They will
uncover the education needed and the salary of their
desired path. Students will receive a monthly paycheck
and then go visit a room with 15 "life" stations. Examples
of the stations include: pay their taxes, buy
clothes for themselves, and kids, buy cell
phones, rent or buy a house, pay back
student loans, visit the lottery table (which
could be good or bad luck), and pay for
childcare. The program is designed to teach kids
about real life as they enter a new phase of their own
life. They will begin to understand decision making,
problem solving and how your education will affect your
income.
Going from the “senior” class at the
elementary school to the “new kids on the block” can be both
exciting and scary for rising 6th graders… but what if, before
they went, these pre-teens had access to a crystal ball that
would reveal some of the secrets of their new school? Students
who sign up for this session will get an exclusive behind-thescenes sneak peek of what they really want to know… How
long will it take me to get from one class to another? How do I
get one of those locks open? What are the older kids like? Will
the teachers review anything with me or will I have to learn all
new stuff from scratch? By the end of this session, THESE new
6th graders will have the inside scoop on what to do, how to do
it, and where to go! (Shhh… they’ll even leave with a preview
of each of the subjects taught!)
