Explain the growth of population, rural to urban migration, and growth of cities associated with the Industrial Revolution. Trace the evolution of work and labor, including the demise of the slave trade and the effects of immigration, mining and manufacturing, division of labor, and the union movement. Explain the emergence of capitalism as a dominant economic pattern. Explain Utopianism, Social Democracy, Socialism, and Communism as a reaction to the rise of capitalism. No vocabulary or persons. (20) o Create 10 Trading Cards from the important people in the chapter. Include people from each section. (5) B LEVEL- 15 points (Complete the following) - You must have 70 points to proceed to the B Level. o Inventor/Invention: Create a mini-poster about an inventor/invention that was created during the Industrial Revolutions. Specific requirements on the back. o Illustrated Timeline: Create an illustrated time line of the Industrial Revolution. Remember: this requires dates, descriptions & images. Your illustrated timeline should include 20 to 35 events connected to the Industrial Revolution. o Illustrated Storybook: Create and illustrate a children’s book that explains the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Specific requirements on the back. (Counts as A & B Level) A LEVEL- 15 points (Complete the following) - You must achieve one B Level assignment before moving to the A level. o Diary Entries: Create two Diary entries as if you were a person living through the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Attach all reference material or links to websites if the content is too long. You may complete up to 125 points to obtain extra credit. Extra credit is only counted if all Levels are complete. Chapter 5 Quiz: October 24th (Wednesday) C Level Due: October 24th (Wednesday) A / B & Tracking Sheet Due: October 25th (Thursday) Inventor/Invention Complete this Project on standard 8.5x11 printer paper Select an inventor who created an invention during the span of 1750 – 1850. There are links on my website to sites that contain information on inventions and inventors that you can use to help you select. Not all inventions listed on these sites were created within the specified timeframe so pick carefully. Once you have decided on an inventor and invention you will create a mini-poster based on them. Your mini-poster must include the following elements: Inventor full name A picture of the inventor Location of birth (country, city and state if Inventor’s date of birth & date died located in the U.S.) Name of the invention Picture of the invention The following information on the invention: What is the purpose of the invention? What type of change(s) did this invention cause? Why is it important? Is this invention still used today? (Why or why not?) Make sure you mini-poster is neat, legible and aesthetically pleasing to look at. Illustrated Storybook Only complete this assignment if you have the skills to do so. Images need to be drawn or computer generated – but must be your own creation. Stick figures will NOT be accepted. Create and illustrate a storybook geared towards children (Grades 3 – 5) about the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Your storybook needs to include the following elements: Brief explanation of the Industrial Revolution Improvements in Agriculture Why the population increased One of the new inventions (flying shuttle, steam engine, water frame, etc) Importance of trains/railroads The cause and effects of urbanization Working conditions in mines and/or factories Use of child labor Remember this is for a child so simply the ideas down to its basic elements. Include a minimum of 5 illustrations that reflect the elements listed above. Diary Entries Create two diary entries that reflect what someone your age would be doing during the beginning stages of the Industrial Revolution. Make sure to include details on the working conditions (factory/mine) and living conditions (tenements) you would experience. Be creative BUT make sure your ideas reflect the realities of city life during the Industrial Revolution.
