Segments
What is a Segment?
A segment is a set of criteria used to select only a
part of the entire set of visits tracked by Piwik.
Using the segments you define, Piwik will generate
reports for only the visits the segment selects.
For instance, you can generate reports for everyone
who visits from Belgium and see how they use your
website. Or you can generate reports for everyone
outside of that country and see how their behaviour
differs. You can also do any number of other things.

Creating a segment in Piwik
To create a segment, click on the segment selector
on the top of the page, next to the date selector:

Click on ‘Add a new segment’ or on the ‘edit’ link
next to an existing segment name to open the
segment editor:

Firstly you can give a name to your segment.
Secondly you can choose in the list on the left one
or more criteria(s) to filter the visits. For instance,
you may select only the visits who have visited the
contact page, only visits from Belgium...

You can now save your segment but it will not be
directly usable. You need to wait that Piwik refresh
all the data. It can take up to 3hours.
Afterward your segment will be available and will be
applicable on the reports for you. If you want to
share your segment with other people, you have to
contact Comm Europa Management.
The results
Segment analysis
When a segment is applied you can go through
most of the reports and the segment will still be
effective.
You can also compare multiple segments at the
same time.
Important Rules
Segments are a powerful Piwik feature but it
requires important resources. This is why the
following policies are applied:
 No more than 10 segments must be created per
user.
 In order to reduce the number of segments per
user, you can request the creation of a global
segment to COMM EUROPA MANAGEMENT
 Segments can be removed by the EA team or
DIGIT if
 The need is fulfilled by a global segment
 Not used during 3 months
 It impacts negatively the overall performance
