Summer Assignment - The School Board of Highlands County

Advanced Placement Studio Art Summer Assignments
DUE THE VERY FIRST DAY OF CLASS!
2D Students:
Assignment #1: Abstract Collage Based on Color, Texture, and Line.
1. Choose two colors.
2. Using magazines (interior design magazines work well for this because they have large areas of
color in photos of floor and walls) cut vertical strips of various widths of the colors you need.
Look for interesting textures in the colors you need:
.
3.
On a piece of 8x12in heavy paper (white poster board is fine) use a pencil to lightly draw a one
inch boarder around the paper.
4. Within the 6x10in format, use a glue stick to attach the strips vertically (in a landscape format.
You need to arrange the strips so that the most vibrant hues of your colors are on the edges
and the duller hues are in middle. You want to try to make the colors GRADUALLY blend
together visually in the middle when you step back away from the work (this is the key to
making this assignment college quality). Yes, you may overlap and repeat strips of the same
color/texture in the work.
5. The strips can over hang the edges of your format for interest.
6. Some Finished Student Examples:
7. This assignment will be used as one of your breath pieces in your portfolio. If you are not sure
what that means right now, that’s OK, we will talk more about it in class OR you can research it
by going here: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/repository/ap-studio-art-coursedescription.pdf The explanation starts on page 20.
Assignment #2: Positive and Negative Space Triptych
1. Go to http://mofac.org/wayside/curriculum-resources/projects/art/.
2. In the Art section,



Click on the at the Power Point for Positive and Negative Space and the Plants link
 On ‘Step I: Gathering Reference Material’, if you choose NOT to go to the
trail to study the plans you may choose other plants from your yard or
surroundings. Be sure to choose plants with stems and leaves that have
interesting negative spaces (this is the key to making this assignment
college quality). If you DO decide to go to the trail, you will find small
markers of the side of College Drive (almost across the street from the
college library) that marks the trail head. Go early in the morning or late in
the afternoon so it is not so hot. If you would like, you can print the ‘Trees
in the Scrub Handout’ and ‘Leaves in the Scrub Download’ to use on the trail
from the Science link of the website.
 On ‘Step I: Gathering Reference Material’, the second bullet point reads:
“When you return to the classroom, you will use your reference material to
create three drawings of plants found on the trail.” This entire assignment
must be done at home this summer. It is due the first day of class. You will
not ‘return to the classroom’ to finish the assignment.
Click on the Positive - Negative Space and the Plants Wayside Shrine Trail link.
This will also give you more detailed step by step instructions. Info on the materials
you need (it is also OK to use poster board and sharpie markers), and a grading
rubric. (Ignore the first check point on the rubric. This will make each worth 25
points).
To see student samples of this assignment: from the APHS AP Art Webpage click
on ‘Summer Assignment’ tab. Open the “Postive and Negatie Plant Space Studies
Studio Examples” PPP.
This assignment will also be used in the breath section of your portfolio.
3D Students:
Assignment #1: Teapot Study and Sketches
1. Using the Internet or books from the library, research teapot design. Look specifically for
teapots that have the principal of movement (this is key to making this assignment college
quality).
2. Draw three teapots (on three different papers) that have the principal of movement. Draw
large (fill the space of at least an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper, you may use your sketchbook if you
would like) and label how you think the parts of the teapot were made (coil, slab, etc). You may
also need to draw what the teapot looks like from the top, bottom, or other side so I can further
understand what it looks like. Two of the drawings must come from a source (please provide all
credit line info you can). The third drawing can be a created from your imagination.
3. After you turn this assignment in for a grade the first day of school, I will conference with you
and we will choose one of the designs for you to base the clay teapot you will make on.
(Remember, if you choose someone else’s design, you must alter it 70 to 80 percent so it you
are not plagiarizing).
Assignment #2:
1. Create a sculpture from paper. Then make two more versions of the same sculpture in different
sizes so that you have a total of three sculptures of 3 different sizes.
2. Arrange the three sculptures as one so that you now have a single sculpture made from your
three forms. If necessary affix the three parts together.
3. View your sculpture from multiple points of view. Decide which side you will display your
sculpture for viewing on the first day of class.
