Hall coaxed life out of the barren sand dunes by planting grasses, then shrubs, then trees at the Western end of the park. This wind break allowed the development of the remainder of the park, and the rest is history! changes in the park John McLaren, horticulturalist and Park superintendent, envisioned the park as a pastoral setting where city residents could escape the clamor of industrial life. McLaren opposed including statues and buildings in the park’s natural setting, but the Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 brought the exhibits and cultural attractions the city residents desired. Today, it is the combination of museums, sculptures, attractions, and a pastoral setting that make the Park a cultural oasis in the city. 28 LINCOLN WAY SF Botanical Garden & Strybing Arboretum Park Wide Bike Rentals (Open Daily) 5 Horseshoe Pits McLaren Lodge (Rec/Park Headquarters) CONSERVATO FELL ST JOHN F.
