Fertility Rate
Updated: 3/31/2016
Definition: The general fertility rate of a population is defined as the total number of births that occur
during a given time period per 1,000 women of reproductive age (15-44 years). Unlike the
unadjusted birth rate, the fertility rate is based on the number of women of childbearing
age in the population rather than the whole population. The total fertility rate (TFR) is the
average number of children that would be born per female if all females lived to the end of
their childbearing years and bore children according to current age-specific fertility rates. For a
population size to remain stable without immigration, the TFR needs to be approximately 2.1
births per woman.1
Summary:
• The general fertility rate among Alaska Native women was 91.2 per 1,000, significantly higher than Alaska
White and U.S. White women.
• The Alaska Native general fertility rate declined significantly between 1991 and 2013 (p<0.01).
• During 2009 - 2013, Alaska Native fertility rates varied widely by tribal health region ranging from 69.2 to
150.5 per 1,000.
• In 2013, the total fertility rate (TFR) among Alaska Native women was 2.5 children per woman aged 15-44
years, higher than the TFR for Alaska White (2.0) and U.S. White women (1.75).
