The purpose of the Essay is to promote understanding of why we celebrate Memorial Day. Students are asked
to write an essay based on the quote below. Here are a few suggestions which will help you do your best on
the essay.
1. Read Topic Quote and questions carefully.
2. Have a central idea that is directly related to the quote; develop points and details in a logical manner;
and avoid frequent or serious errors in grammar, word choice, and sentence structure.
3. Suggested essay length is one page.
4. The top of the page should include: First & Last Name – Grade – School Name – Teacher / Counselor

Why is it important to honor and remember our military heroes who gave their lives for our country? What
will happen if we stop honoring and remembering our military heroes?
Winners will be announced the week of May 8, 2017 via social media and through the school administration.
All essays submitted will be on display during the 97th Annual Memorial Day Observance at Rose Hills on May
29, 2017. Winners will receive their prizes and recognition for their work during the ceremony. Everyone is
invited to the free event. Program starts at 11:00a.m.
