player completes a 24-hour shift.

Using the Elapsed Time Ruler
Prior to playing Elapsed Time Taxi, demonstrate how to
use the Elapsed Time Ruler: Point out the 15-minute
intervals on the Ruler. Demonstrate how you place your
finger or a marker on the start time and then move
forward or backward to show the elapsed time and to find
an answer. Urge students to try a simple elapsed time
problem with your guidance. Explain that the Ruler will be
at the Center to help students as they play.

Elapsed Time Taxi
Number of Players: 2 to 4
Object: To use your knowledge of addition, subtraction,
and time to find elapsed time
Materials: Elapsed Time Taxi Game Board, Taxi Game
Pieces, Elapsed Time Taxi Question Cards, Spinner,
Elapsed Time Ruler
How to Play:
1. All players:
• Sit so that you can all see the Elapsed Time Taxi
Game Board.
• Place the Elapsed Time Taxi Question Cards on the
Game Board.
• Decide who goes first.
2. Player 1:
• Place your Taxi Game Pieces on Start at 6:00 a.m.
• Draw a Question Card and answer the question,
using the Elapsed Time Ruler to help you figure out
the answer.
• Player 2 flips your Question Card over to check your
answer.
• If your answer is correct, you spin and move that
many hours on the Elapsed Time Taxi Game Board.
• If you land on Lose a turn or Take an extra turn, it
is applied to your next turn.
Choose a group of students to play Elapsed Time Taxi
with you for the class. Explain the object of the game and
how to play to the volunteers. With the rest of the class
gathered around, encourage the volunteers to play the
game. Showing students the Center Task Card, indicate
that it will be in the center with the game if they need to
be reminded of how to play.
Center Task Card
Post the Center Task Card at the numeracy center where
students will be able to see it easily. Remind students to
refer to the shaded section at the top of the Card to be
sure that they have all the needed materials.
Taxi Time Card Reproducible
Copy and distribute the Taxi Time Card Reproducible for
review, encouraging students to use the Elapsed Time
Ruler. Also, leave the reproducible at the numeracy center
as a follow up activity, review, or assessment.
Answers: a) 45 minutes, b) 9:45 a.m., c) 12:30 p.m.,
d) 1 hour and 15 minutes, e) 9 hours and 30 minutes/91⁄2
hours, f) 12:00 p.m., g) 4 hours and 30 minutes,
