NCGOP 2016 State Convention Recap
Raleigh, N.C. – The North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) held its annual state convention in
Greensboro, North Carolina over the weekend of May 6-8, 2016. Delegates to the state convention
conducted important business affecting this year’s election cycle and our Party going forward.
1
With more than 1,000 delegates in
attendance, the Party saw Senator Richard
Burr and Governor Pat McCrory officially
accept their nominations for re-election.
NCGOP also welcomed Senator Jeff Sessions
who spoke on behalf of our presumptive
nominee, Donald Trump.
Other special guests included Representative
Marsha Blackburn, Pete Hegseth, NC Spin,
Steve Moore, Ralph Reid and the Benham
Brothers.

As you all know National Police Week was May 15th -21st and CCRW members were encouraged
to take goodies to the police in the area in which they lived. The following members of the
CCRW who live at Emerald Isle and one who lives in Bogue decided to take treats to the EI
Police Department every day during the week. I would like to thank the following members for
their contributions of very tasty treats: Cindy Crabb, Patty Morey, Linda Hughs, Juli Cosgrove ,
Valerie Lieske and Deidre Heverly. The Police department was very appreciative of everything.
Thank you all!!!

Jean Preston Memorial Park Dedication
(CENTER) JUDY WILGUS HELPS TO CUT THE RIBBON OPENING THE PARK ON MAY 25, 2016
As reported in the Carteret County News Times (Friday May 27, 2016 edition):
“EMERALD ISLE — Dozens of children frolicked on new, all-inclusive playground equipment on a
picture-perfect, sun-dappled Wednesday morning as this Bogue Banks town dedicated a new
park in honor of the late resident and state legislator Jean Preston. The Senator Jean Preston
Memorial Park was completed earlier this month, at a cost of $275,000 – not including
thousands of dollars worth of donated work and materials – off Highway 58, adjacent to Bogue
Sound, beside the town’s boating access facility, a mile or so east of the town hall. The
dedication was delayed until Wednesday, which would have been Sen. Preston’s 81 st birthday.
State Rep. Pat McElraft, who was one of Sen. Preston’s closest friends, referenced that in her
remarks during the ceremony: “Why do we have such a beautiful day?” she said, before leading
the crowd in a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday.’ Because it’s Jean Preston’s birthday.”

Senator Norm Sanderson taught Carteret Count Homeschoolers
valuable lessons about the U.S. Constitution.
Presentation by Attorney Deborah Dewart
The Guest Speaker for the May 20, 2016 General Meeting was Club member and Attorney,
Deborah Dewart. Debbie has a solo law practice and practices in NC, California, the U.S.
Supreme Court and in all federal courts. She has an abundance of talent including being an
author; Death of a Christian Nation, a ventriloquist and songwriter with a ministry to young
children (Resurrection Rabbit) and has produced a musical, “Let Freedom Ring” to introduce
children to their free exercise rights under the First Amendment.
Deborah spoke about the Charlotte Bathroom Ordinance, enacted February 22, 2016, and the
actions taken after HB2 was enacted on March 23, 2016 (The Public Facilities and Privacy
Security Act). Since HB2 was enacted, 5 lawsuits have been filed.
In her presentation, Debbie made the following KEY POINTS:

The DOJ's action against the State of North Carolina violates the separation of powers.
As an executive agency, the DOJ lacks authority to make law.
7



The DOJ's action also violates federalism. The states have a right to set policies and
protect the privacy rights of their citizens.
The DOJ improperly threatens to withhold funds in order to coerce NC and other states
into adopting laws and policies the DOJ favors.
The DOJ and other opponents of HB2 attempt to redefine reality, i.e., the biological and
anatomical difference between men and women. Recognizing those differences, in
order to protect privacy, is not “discrimination”.
The problem with an “open bathroom” policy is not so much those few individuals who are confused
about their sexuality, but the vast potential for abuse by predators and lack of objective criteria for
businesses, schools, etc. to make the distinction before someone is harmed. Any male could “identify”
as a female and claim the legal right to be in a woman's bathroom or other private facility. Deborah
ended the meeting by demonstrating her ventriloquist skills with Sherry the Rabbit.
