Complex Care - Joe - Interserve Care at Home

Case Study
Complex Care
Meet Joe
Joe* is in his sixties and lives at home with his wife, Carol*. Joe suffers from Motor Neurone Disease and as a result
of this illness, his condition is likely to continuously deteriorate.
Whilst Carol is able to support wherever possible, due to the level of care Joe needs, additional support is required.
Before the initial enquiry to Interserve Healthcare, Joe was supported by Marie Curie and another healthcare agency.
Joe’s care requirements
We first had the pleasure of meeting Joe and Carol after they were referred to us for day visits by Marie Curie.
Following the referral, we arranged for a Branch Consultant and a Nurse Advisor to visit the couple at their home and
carry out a full assessment of Joe’s care requirements.
It was identified that we would need to provide daily assistance with moving and handling, eating and drinking and to
use essential equipment, including a cough assist to help him clear secretion from his lungs. This would be delivered
in three separate shifts during the day and we would work in cooperation with the other healthcare agency supporting
Joe.
As Joe was faced with financial constraints and a high level of care requirements, he was concerned about what
options were available to him. We advised Joe that through our highly effective task delegation process we would
be able to organise care to be delivered by a Carer, with the overall care package being managed by a Nurse, thus
providing a cost-effective solution to his dilemma.
How we help Joe
Joe’s condition is unfortunately unlikely to improve, as a result, the objective for our care service has been to support
him with his current needs to try and make him as comfortable as possible whilst maintaining his independence.
As his illness has progressed, Joe’s funding has increased. We have therefore been able to adapt his care package,
now providing support through the night in addition to his day visits. We continue to review his case regularly, making
sure he has all the support that he needs and amending any aspect of his care service that he wishes to change.
We also provide support to Carol, helping her to deal with her feeling about her husband’s terminal condition. She is
now able have some time to herself and also get a good night sleep, knowing that someone is there to support Joe,
should he require care during the night.
