A. Scholarships Requiring Nomination
Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program – Central High may nominate one senior
to apply for this scholarship which is a onetime $1000 award. Students must have a minimum 2.8
GPA, demonstrate leadership in school activity or work experience, and commitment to community
service. Students interested in being considered should submit a CHS Scholarship Nomination form
United States Senate Youth Program for 2015-16(Juniors and Seniors) - Deadline: November
6, 2015
Two representatives from Tennessee (Juniors and/or Seniors) will participate in activities in
Washington, D.C. for a week in March. $5,000 scholarship certificates will be presented to the
delegates during their visit. CHS can only select one student to advance to the next level of
competition. Eligible students need to be currently serving in an elected or appointed capacity in

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards (9th-12th Grades) - Deadline: November 3, 2015
If you've made a difference through volunteering over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a
fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., next May by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award!
Any young person grades 9-12 who is a legal resident of and US state or DC who has conducted a
volunteer service activity within the 12 months prior to the date of the application may apply. See the

Wendy’s High School Heisman - Deadline: October 2, 2015
This Scholarship honors both male and female high school seniors who excel in academics, athletics,
and student leadership. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA and participate in at least one school

Professional Athletes Foundation Program
Central High School may nominate one male and one female athlete to be considered for this$2500
one-time scholarship. Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, be accepted to a 2 or 4 year college,
have participated in varsity athletics for at least one year and be nominated by a coach. The student
athlete may not have accepted any scholarships to participate in college athletic. An essay is required
as part of the application.

Executive Women International Scholarship Program
Central High School may submit one nominee for the EWI Scholarship. Applicants are first judged by
the local Knoxville Chapter; Chapter winners are submitted to the Corporate level for a chance to win
one of multiple scholarships. Applicants must plan to pursue a degree at an accredited postsecondary institution, have demonstrated financial need, have a minimum 3.00GPA, and have
contributed to their community as demonstrated by their involvement in extra-curricular activities,
work, religious or volunteer activities. The application includes an essay, two letters of
recommendation and financial information completed by the parents/guardians. Interested students
should complete a Central High School Scholarship Nomination Form, a copy of a resume, and a
brief statement describing why they are a good candidate. See Mrs. Sharp for the Scholarship
Nomination Form.

Knoxville Football Officials Association- Three scholarships of $2000 each will be awarded to
seniors who either play football at Central High School or are directly associated with the team (i.e.
cheerleader, manager or trainer). Academics, leadership and financial need are considered in
awarding the scholarship. If you are interested in being considered for this scholarship, you must ask
your coach to nominate you. If nominated, your family must provide last year’s Income Tax Return to
confirm financial need.

LaTain McGhee Scholarship
Central High School may nominate one senior for a $2000 scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee.
The student nominated must have been involved in high school athletics for all four years as a team member,
manager or cheerleader. Leadership in school and community and financial need are considered. Students
interested in being nominated should submit a resume and a letter of recommendation from a coach.

Hampton Scholarship Foundation
Central High School may nominate one student for the Hampton Memorial Scholarship which awards a $1500
renewable scholarship to Tennessee residents who demonstrate financial need (EFC is less than $18,000) and
rank near the top of their class. The nominated student will complete an application, which includes an essay,
and be required to submit a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA. Students interested in
being nominated should submit a Scholarship Nomination Form.

B. Scholarships from Colleges/Universities
Auburn University- the Presidential, Founders, and University Scholarships are available to nonresident students. These academic scholarships are awarded competitively in December for students
with a minimum 28 ACT and 3.5 GPA, however the minimum test score and GPA does not guarantee
a scholarship will be awarded. Students must be accepted for admission and complete the
scholarship application online through the Auburn University Scholarship Opportunity Manager

Belmont University–This student must gain acceptance for the school, then they may be considered

Berea College (KY)-All students admitted to Berea College receive a four-year tuition scholarship
valued between $50,000 and $100, 00. Priority consideration begins in September and continues

Carson Newman College- All freshmen admitted to Carson Newman are considered for the
Presidential, Dean’s Faculty, Achievement, and Opportunity Scholarships. There is no separate
application for these scholarships. Minimum GPA is 2.69 and ACT is 20. Scholarship amounts range

College of Charleston- Merit Scholarships are awarded to students in the top 5% of their class and
have at least an ACT score of 29. The number of awards varies each year; the applicant pool is very

East Tennessee State University - Guaranteed scholarship based on ACT 25 and GPA 3.5 ranging
from $2,000-$5,000 per year. In order to be considered for these, a student must first fill out the

Honors Scholars is a separate application requires minimum 3.5 GPA and 29 ACT

Haslam Scholarship at UT-Knoxville – Students interested in applying for this competitive

Lincoln Memorial University- Academic Scholarships
LMU offers a limited number of full tuition scholarships to students who have a 29 ACT/1290 SAT and
a 3.5 GPA. Merit scholarships are available to other students based on ACT scores and GPA. No

Middle Tennessee State University- Students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and ACT 25.
Amounts range from $2000-$6000. The ACT must be taken no later than December of the

Upon being accepted for admission to MTSU, a student is then considered for scholarships.
The Buchanan Fellowship at MTSU is a competitive scholarship selected by the Honors College.

The University of Alabama- Capstone, Collegiate, UA and Presidential Scholars are awarded to
non-resident students. Scholarships range from $3500 to the full value of out of state tuition. Students
must first submit a completed application for admission before completing the scholarship application
online. It may take 24-48 hours before receiving an ID number to be able to access the scholarship
application. The December ACT or SAT is the last one a student may take to be considered for
scholarships.

University of Georgia- Classic Scholars The University of Georgia will award out-of-state students,
who meet the academic criteria, a waiver of tuition and fees equal to ½ the differential of in-state
tuition/fees and non-resident tuition/fees (Minimum amount will be $9105/year). Students must have a
minimum 29 ACT or 2000 SAT.

Pellissippi, Walters State, Tennessee Tech, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, or Maryville
College. All applicants must be US Citizens and have scored a minimum 19 on the ACT. (ETF)
Harold W. Cranfield Memorial Scholarship: Scholarship amount: $ $1,700 – Eligibility
Requirements: For graduating high school seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are full-time
students at an accredited not-for-profit college or university. US Citizenship and Participation in
Youth Athletic Program (YAP) of the Knoxville Track Club are additional requirements. (ETF)
Gail Clay Scholarship: Scholarship amount: $2,000 per year for four years – Eligibility
Requirements: For Graduating seniors or current college/university students whose parent or spouse
currently works as a full-time employee at the University of Tennessee or other state-supported
higher education institution located in East Tennessee Foundation’s service area. Applicant must
enroll full-time in an accredited Tennessee public university or community college and must

Gordon W. and Agnes P. Cobb Scholarship: Scholarship amount: $10,000 per year for four years
– Eligibility Requirements: Graduating high school seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are studying
in a medical or health care related field. Applicant must be enrolled full-time in an accredited public or
private, not-for-profit college or university in the state of Tennessee. Applicant must demonstrate
financial need. Special consideration will be given to applicants from single parent families and
strong work or volunteer history. The high school must submit a statement of the number of

James K. Goldston INFOSEC Scholarship: Scholarship amount: $1,200 – Eligibility Requirements:
Graduating seniors with a minimum 2.5 GPA studying in a National Security Agency-approved
Information Security curriculum. Applicants must be a US citizen. Special consideration will be given
to non-traditional students demonstrating commitment to Tennessee schools. (ETF)
Knox Central High Class of ’50 Alumni Association Scholarship: Scholarship amount: $2,500 –
Eligibility Requirements: For graduating seniors from Central High School who will be enrolled fulltime at an accredited not-for-profit college, university, or community college. Applicants will go
through an interview process. (ETF)
Knox Central High School Class of ’50 Alumni Association-Strader Scholarship: Scholarship
amount: $3,500 per year for four years – Eligibility Requirements: For Central High School graduating
seniors who are enrolling full-time at an accredited college or university or non-traditional high
education program or trade school, accredited by the appropriate accrediting body for the particular
course of study. Minimum GPA requirement of 2.0, but preference will be given to students whose
GPA falls between 2.0 and 3.0. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. (ETF)
Knoxville Business Association Scholarship: Scholarship amount: $1,000 first year; $1,500
second year; $2,000 third year; $2,500 fourth year – Eligibility requirements: Graduating senior in
Knox County with a minimum 3.0 GPA who is studying Business full-time at the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to

Lawrence Strader Boy Scouts of America Scholarship: Scholarship amount: $3,000 for four years
– Eligibility requirements: Graduating seniors in the East Tennessee Foundation area with a minimum
2.5 GPA who are enrolled full-time at an accredited, public or private, not-for-profit college or
university. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and be a currently registered member of Boy
Scouts of America, Great Smoky Mountain Council, with a minimum of three years participation as a

Tennessee Concrete Association Essay Contest—open to all high school students ages 16-18; up

Alcoa Sons and Daughters Scholarship This scholarship is for children of eligible employees of
Alcoa. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be graduating high school seniors who are
enrolling in a two- or four-year US institution and have received ACT or SAT scores (if attending a
four-year college).

American Meteorological Society Minority Scholarships – for minority students who intend to
pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences (not marine biology).

Allison Doak Scholarship – for individuals who are developmentally and or physically challenged.

Knox County Council PTA Scholarship- (Alice B Deeds)The Knox County Council PTA offers $500
scholarships to deserving Knox County students. Criteria for selection include demonstrated financial
need, academically qualified for college admission and a desire to earn the scholarship. A teacher
reference as well as a personal reference is required. Applications will be available in the Counseling
Office.

Roger and Evelyn Paddison Scholarship – requires a minimum 3.0 gpa. Application available in

Y-12 Federal Credit Union Bill T. Hicks Scholarship A one-time award of $500 will be awarded to
seniors who are members of Y-12 Federal Credit Union and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Applicants
must write a 250 word essay and may include letters of recommendation. Applications are available
in the Counseling Office.

Rotary Foundation of Knoxville The Rotary Foundation of Knoxville awards a $4000 renewable scholarship
for a student with genuine financial need. Students must complete an application and get two letters of

Barney Thompson Scholarship The Barney Thompson Scholarship is a one-time $500 scholarship awarded
to a senior from each high school in Knox County.

TVA Credit Union Simply Smart Scholarship The TVA Employees Credit Union Simply Smart scholarship is
a one-time $2000 scholarship. Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial need, and is

Stan & Thelma Plumlee Scholarship- a renewable $2000 scholarship is given by the Tennessee
Housing Association. Applicants must be associated with the manufactured or modular housing
industry (i.e. living in a manufactured or modular home or a family member working in the industry).
Financial need is considered. An application and two letters of recommendation are required.

Optimist Club Henry Naff Foundation The Henry Neff Foundation will award five $1000 (non-renewable) to
students attending a high school in the Knox County area. Students must demonstrate financial need, be
actively involved in school and community activities and have performed well in school. Applications will be

Tennessee HOSA – available to seniors who plan to continue his/her education in the health care

Fountain City Lions Club – Awarded to a Central High student who has a 3.5 gpa of higher,

100 Black Men of Greater Knoxville Essay – Must have a 2.5 gpa; extracurricular activities and
leadership roles will be considered. $1,000 scholarship. (April deadline)
American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers- Four $3000 ASHRAE
scholarships will be awarded to seniors who have been accepted in a pre-engineering, engineering, or
engineering technology program leading to a Bachelor’s degree program. Students must have a minimum 3.00

Sigma Phi Epsilon Balanced Man Scholarship The TN Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is
offering two Balanced Man Scholarships to two outstanding freshmen entering East Tennessee State

Anne Armstrong Scholarship – Available to a Central high Senior who is planning to attend an
accredited college or university. The senior must have a hear for helping other and plans to continue
mission work upon graduating from high school. Application available in the Counseling Office.

Tennessee PTA Teacher and Child-Related Services Scholarship
The Tennessee PTA awards a one-time $2000 scholarship to graduating seniors interested in the
field of teaching or other child-related field such as medicine, law, or any new field of child-related
studies. The student must attend a college or university in Tennessee. The student of student’s family
must be a member of the Tennessee PTA
(very easy to do!). The applicant will be considered on
financial need, academics, sincerity of purpose, motivation, community involvement and
recommendations.

Beta Sigma Phi Academic Scholarship- A one-time $500 scholarship will be awarded to one Knox
County female student from the class of 2015. The application includes a brief essay, a letter of

Jeanette S. Miller Scholarship- The Oak Ridge Chapter of the Federally Employed Women will
award a one-time $500 scholarship to a student who demonstrates financial need. An essay, honors,
awards and leadership positions are also considered. The application will be available in the

FEW Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Scholarship- The Oak Ridge Chapter
of the Federally Employed Women will award a one-time $500 scholarship to a student who
demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and show promise of continued excellence in a
STEM related field. In addition to the application, an essay and two letters of recommendation are
required. Applications will be available in Counseling Office .

Eagle Scout of the Year- The American Legion Department awards a $3000 scholarship for the
Eagle Scout of the Year in Tennessee. The winning nomination is sent to the National Headquarters
to be entered in the nation-wide Scout of the Year contest. Applicants must be active members of a
Boy Scout troop and have received the Eagle Scout Award. Applications will be available in

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship is a highly selective scholarship program for

Gates Millennium Scholars
Scholarship by the Gates Foundation for African-American, American Indian/Native Alaskan, Asian
Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American who is a citizen or legal permanent resident or
national of the U.S. and who has a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 who will enroll college in the
fall of 2015. The student should have demonstrated leadership abilities in community service,

Ten $1000 (non-renewable) scholarships are awarded each year based on financial need, academic
achievement, and community service. Students must demonstrate a commitment to community

GPA. An essay, transcript, letter of recommendation, and page 1 of the Student Aid Report (SAR)

Janice M Scott Memorial Scholarship The Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund has been
established to honor Mrs. Scott who was among the 125 individuals who perished in Pentagon during

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program
High school seniors planning to major in a specified course of study that focuses on
Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business-related programs of study and interested in

Achievers Scholarship Program. The program awards 50 Buick Achievers National Scholarships of
up to $25,000 (renewable). Criteria include academic achievement, financial need, participation and

State Scholarships/Grants

HOPE - Must have a minimum 3.0 gpa or a 21 ACT; must complete the FAFSA; Award is
$1750 per semester for freshman and sophomore years and increases to $2250 for junior
and senior year. Renewal criteria: 2.75 gpa after 24 and 48 attempted college hours.
General Assembly Merit – minimum 29 ACT AND 3.75 final weighted gpa. Award is $500
per semester; must complete the FAFSA
Aspire Award – Parents adjusted gross income must be less than $36,000; Award is $750
per semester.
Hope Access Grant – Must have an 18-20 on the ACT and 2.75-2.99 final weighted gpa;
parents adjusted gross income must be $36,000 or less.
Hope Foster Child – must meet HOPE requirements; students who were in DCS custody
for at least 1 year after 14th birthday.
Ned McWherter Scholars – minimum 29 ACT and 3.5 gpa; extra credit for Honors or AP
classes and leadership in extracurricular activities.
Dependent Children Scholarship – dependent children of law enforcement officer,
firemen or emergency medical technicians who were killed or permanently disabled in the
line of duty while employed in Tennessee.
