U.S. POSTAL SERVICE Quad Cities P&D Facility 7700 68th Street Milan, IL 61264-9997 The Quad Cities Processing and Distribution Facility is a 176,000 square foot facility located on the south side of the Quad Cities International Airport. It was constructed in 1997. Approximately 240 full-time employees work at the facility. The facility handles approximately 1.5 million pieces of mail per day with the majority of the mail being processed between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 a.m. Each evening, mail is collected from 90 Post Offices located within approximately a 60-mile radius. This mail is canceled, sorted, assigned transportation, and sent on its way by approximately 11:30 p.m. Mail generated locally, and incoming mail from around the country / world, is processed on the night shift. This mail is sorted to the same 90 Post Offices. State of the art automated equipment is used to process 95% of the mail. The remaining 5% is processed the old fashioned way, by hand. Much of this mail arrives throughout the night, and is processed and on its way to most of these offices by 7 a.m. Approximately 80% of the letter mail processed for these 90 offices is sorted to Delivery Point Sequence. This means that the carrier can take his letter mail directly to the street, eliminating the timely task of manual sortation by each carrier. In 2003, the Quad Cities Processing and Distribution facility took top honors in the Hawkeye District in the areas of productivity, safety, and service. During this time period, the facility provided overnight service at an efficiency rate of 97.2% to overnight areas, which includes mail destinating to zip code areas 520, 522-524, 527, 528, 612 and 614. A new study by the Transportation Security Administration targeted wait times at the nation's top airports. The study included travel over the Thanksgiving holiday. Chicago's O'Hare, Washington Dulles and Dallas-Fort Worth airports had the shortest wait times to get through security, averaging less than two minutes from the back of the line to clearing the screening area. Los Angeles and Miami were the worst with average times of about seven minutes each. These are average times for clearing security so you know that there will be times when the wait will be a lot longer. The study was done by giving travelers a yellow card when they joined the line and collecting it when through screening and noting the length of time it took. Wait times vary from airport to airport and most often the wait is made worse by unprepared travelers. Airports say these travelers are actually to blame for some of the biggest delays. Before you travel, check out http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=183&content= 0900051980074366 for a list of travel tips.
