SNOW CLOSURE Key Stage 3 ENGLISH
YEAR 9 ENGLISH
1. Plan and write a persuasive essay on one of the following topics: a) argue for or against the
view that children would be better educated from home.
b) argue either for or
against the reasons for having school uniform.
c) argue either for or
against the idea that in our society we do not do enough exercise.
2. Write a creative story or poem based around the idea of a heavy snowfall.
3. Prepare a 3 minute presentation on in issue that you think is important, for example caring
for our animals responsibly, the ethics of animal testing, pollution, helping the environment,
the dangers and benefits of computer games. These are just examples – try to choose a
subject that you have lots of ideas about.
4. Design your own advertisement for a product of your own choice.
5. Write an imaginary article on the theme of the 2012 Olympics. You should include ideas on
how you think the Olympics will affect you personally, your local community and England
generally.
6. Design a poster on the theme of the Olympic torch coming through Salisbury.
7. Create a word search on the theme of the Olympics (to be 25 words by 25 words square).
YEAR 8 ENGLISH
1. Choose an advertisement from the television that you think is particularly good OR
particularly bad. Write an imaginary formal letter to the television company in which you
give your views of the advertisement.
2. Design your own advertisement for a product of your own choice.
3. Write an interesting account of one of your days off during the snow closure. Try to include
what you saw, heard, felt and did, so that the reader will be fully engaged OR write an
imaginary story entitled: ‘Caught in a Snow Storm’.
4. Write an account or review of the most interesting book or television programme that you
have read or seen recently.
5. Write a poem on the theme of snow.
6. Create a word search on the theme of winter and television (it should be 25 letters by 25).
7. Read a book! Then read another!
YEAR 7 ENGLISH
1. Write a diary of your time off during the school closure. Try to be as detailed as possible and
try to give opinions of what you have seen and done. Include feelings as well. You may wish
to include some illustrations as well.
2. Write a review (at least a full page) of your favourite television programme.
3. Write 12 questions that you would like to ask your favourite personality (for example a
famous sports person, a TV star, a singer and so forth) OR Write an imaginary conversation
or interview with your favourite famous person.
4. Write a page on ‘How to Survive in your first year at secondary school’. It may be serious or
humorous.
5. Read a book! Then read another!
