Student and Faculty Mentoring in ResearchMy primary teaching role has been as a research mentor for junior faculty, fellows, graduate and
medical students. Through my leadership of and involvement in several training programs at
UNC, I have mentored trainees from a variety of disciplines and academic ranks, substantially
contributing to UNC’s pool of future investigators in clinical and community-based research. I
co-direct UNC’s Simmons Scholars Program, devoted to attracting, recruiting and retaining
clinical faculty from underrepresented groups in order to enhance faculty diversity in the School
of Medicine. I have served as a core faculty member for the RWJ Clinical Scholars Program and
several NIH T32 training grants, including the National Research Service Award (NRSA)
Primary Care Research Program and the NRSA Health Services Research Fellowship, both
based at the Sheps Center, as well as on UNC’s Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in
Women's Health (BIRCWH), Roadmap KL2, and K30 programs. I have served as co-director for
training and outreach for the Center for Genomics and Society (P50HG004488) and have been a
faculty mentor for the UNC Kellogg’s Health Scholars postdoctoral program. Since arriving at
UNC, I have served as a summer research mentor for 12 minority undergraduates from across the
country in the UNC Summer Pre Graduate Research Experience and most recently the
Morehouse School of Medicine IMOTHEP program. I have served as mentor on two diversity
supplements and one administrative supplement to add junior minority trainees to my funded
research projects. Through these programs I have obtained a wealth of experience providing both
direct, formal research mentorship and informal career guidance for young scholars. I also
currently hold a K24 (HL 105493) to mentor trainees in CVD risk reduction in rural minority
communities.

MTEC 123: Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health: Progress and Community Impact, UNC
Department of Social Medicine
The goal of this seminar is to encourage critical thinking and lifelong learning about the ways in
which various disciplines investigate, address, and communicate information about health
disparities. We review and discuss readings about health disparities and the social determinants
of health from a range of sources including peer-reviewed journals, foundation and research
organization reports, government policies and programs, and news media coverage. These
readings serve as a base for our journal club, and a critical foundation from which to do research.
Each seminar starts with a student led journal club that draws on seminal articles as well as
contemporary literature on environmental influences on chronic illness.
Required 2nd year course for all medical students taught in the Department of Social Medicine
(students select from fourteen seminars): approximately 12 students per seminar, 12 sessions, 1
hour 50 minutes each session, Spring semester

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health: What do we know and what can we do?
The objectives of this course are to explore two questions ― Why do some groups have better
health than others? How do individual, environmental, structural and contextual factors
contribute to racial differences in health outcomes? Participants critically evaluate the scientific
literature to understand the sources of racial differences in health in the US today. Key questions
for reflection include: Does medical care contribute to health and minimize health disparities? Or
does the doctor-patient relationship reproduce pre-existing social inequalities? What types of
interventions would need to be put in place to address or ameliorate disparities in health,
disparities in healthcare?
Required 2nd year course for all medical students taught in the Department of Social Medicine
(students select from fourteen seminars): approximately 12 students per seminar, 12 sessions, 1
hour 50 minutes each session, Spring semester

Preconception e-Intervention to Reduce Infant Mortality Due to Maternal Obesity
Role: Investigator, 2% Effort, $228,000
Agency: NIDDK, Grant#: R21DK095189-01A1, 04/01/2013-03/31/2018
Overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions and contribute to a vicious cycle of diabetes,
cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women and adverse birth outcomes their offspring. Women who are
overweight/obese at conception are at risk for gestational diabetes (i.e.diabetes of pregnancy), postpartum
weight retention, type 2 diabetes and CVD in the years after delivery.1 African American women share a
disproportionate burden of overweight/obesity and the downstream consequences of this disease. Of the 4
million women who become pregnant each year in the US, over 60% are overweight or obese. African
American women who are considering pregnancy should benefit from behavioral interventions (Diabetes
Prevention Program, PREMIER), proven effective for weight loss and glucose control in general
populations, but there continues to be a need to test the effectiveness in underserved populations and
during this critical period of the woman’s lifespan. We propose building on our experiences with First
WInD to test the effectiveness of a theory-driven, provider-supported, preconception intervention.
