Purpose
This unit standard is for people who are working or intend to work in extractive
and or process industry as Tappers.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
 Demonstrate knowledge of tapping
 Carry out pre start checks
 Start tapping
 Monitor the tapping process
 Stop tapping
Special notes
1. General Information
i. Assessment of this unit standard must be done in a practical activity in a
process plant.
ii. A portfolio of evidence will be accepted as evidence to attain credits for this
unit standard, provided it comes from credible sources.
2. Definitions
i. Credible sources are people who are qualified in the sector at a higher level
than that of this unit standard and having substantial experience in the
sector working with and supervising the candidate.
3. Legislation and references
i. Performance of this unit standard must be done in accordance with the
following legislation and codes of practices: Mines, Quarries, Works and
Machinery Act 44:02 and its subsequent amendments.
Quality assurance requirements
BOTA has established a system for moderating the assessment of candidates
against this standard. Assessors of this standard must comply with the

Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of tapping
Performance criteria
1.1.
Daily schedule, quantity and type of material to be tapped are determined
in accordance with company operational procedures.
1.2.
Communication methods are determined in accordance with company
operational procedures. Communication methods include but not limited to
signals, radio.
1.3.
Personal protective equipment is selected, fitted, and used in accordance
with company operational procedures. Personal protective equipment
includes but not limited to overalls, safety boots, long sleeve leather
gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, respirator, leather
suits, face shields.
1.4.
The process flow of material is described in accordance with company
operational procedures.

Carry out pre start checks
Performance criteria
2.1.
Pre start checks of the tapping process are carried out in accordance with
company operational procedures.
2.2.
Pre start checklist is completed in accordance with company operational
procedures.

Start tapping
Performance criteria
3.1.
Settings are checked and adjusted in accordance with company
operational procedures.
3.2.
Tapping is started in accordance with company operational procedures.
3.3.
Performance is checked in accordance with company operational
procedures.
Element 4
Monitor the tapping process
Performance criteria
4.1.
Visual checks of the tapping process are conducted to identify problems in
accordance with company operational procedures.
4.2.
Material is selected in accordance with company operational procedures.
4.3.
Material is tapped in accordance with company operational procedures.
4.4.
Product quality is maintained in accordance with company operational
procedures.
4.5.
Plant feed rates and settings are maintained in accordance with company
operational procedures.
Element 5
Stop tapping
Performance criteria
5.1.
The tapping process is stopped in accordance with company operational
procedures.
5.2.
Operational maintenance is carried out in accordance with company
operational procedures and manufacturer’s specifications.
5.3.
Good housekeeping is carried out in accordance with company safety
procedures.
