Phil and Gilda Franklyn Harvey and Gail Linder TSEISCHEM L’SHALOM TO THE NELIKS LAST WEEK’S DILEMMA: We wish much hatzlacha to Lev and Helaine Nelik who are making aliyah this upcoming week. We will miss you! A famous Chazzan led services at a large synagogue. Since it was the summer, one man decided to accept Shabbos later, and recorded the beautiful service. However, the Chazzan and the Congregation had already accepted Shabbos at the earlier time. Is the recording considered to have been made on Shabbos, in which case listening to it would be forbidden? Lev and Helaine Nelik “in appreciation of Congregation Ariel, from its youngest member to its oldest member, and all the Rabbanim and Rebbetzins. Thank you for being who you are and doing what you do. With gratitude to Hashem – Lev and Helaine Nelik” Answer: THANK YOU TO OUR SHABBOS GREETERS This is not a Halachic dilemma. We can assume the Chazzan and Congregation did not know they were being recorded, and therefore they committed no sin. The man who made the recording had not yet accepted Shabbos, so he also did not sin. However, it was ruled that the recording should not be listened to on moral grounds. Listeners might be misled into thinking that the Chazzan disregarded the Shabbos, or that recording is permitted on Shabbos. This potential desecration of Hashem must be avoided at all costs, so the recording should not be disseminated or listened to if one already owns it. THIS WEEK’S DILEMMA: Aron walks up to the fish counter and picks out a Salmon. “Are you sure you want this one"? asked the clerk. “Yes please”, Aron confirmed. “Would you like this fish filleted?”, the clerk asked. “Yes, that would be so kind of you”, Aron answered. The clerk proceeded to cut the fish open. As he cut the fish, his knife hit something hard. To his surprise, the clerk found a small ring inside the fish. Aron saw the ring taken out of the fish and exclaimed “Wow, what a tremendous blessing from Hashem”. “Hold on a minute", the clerk retorted. "I found the ring first. You didn’t pay for the fish yet”. "I didn’t pay for it, but I committed to buying it”, Aron argued. As the two began to argue, the owner of the store approached them. “Both of you are wrong”, the owner said. “The ring belongs to me. It was found in one of the fish that I bought, so it belongs to me". The three, unable to resolve the question, brought the question to a Rav. Who do you think gets the right to the ring? The customer, the clerk or the store owner?
