The leaves are beginning to change, and we had a fabulous BOM turnout with the fall inspired blocks! I absolutely loved it! I hope all of you will continue to make blocks for the BOM. The colors this month are still a twist on fall, with red, black and gold being the primary colors. So, if you didn’t win, there is a chance for you to win fall quilt blocks! We also had a wonderful auction for our program this month. We ended up making $5803.00! This provides for us to be able to bring great teachers and lectures that we would otherwise be unable to afford. I want to thank Kim Fess and her team for organizing such a great auction! Their work was really spectacular and your contributions were essential. October also brought about our annual bus trip. This month we went to the Richmond area shops. Thank you to Loretta Spittle for organizing and planning this trip. Again, I love our guild and the willingness for people to step up and take on tasks that make our guild exciting and fun. We have a great November planned as well, with Judy Gula coming to talk to us about embellishments and a workshop. I also hope that all of you are taking advantage of the in-house programs with Patrice. And as always, I hope all of you are working to put at least ONE quilt in the show. Last year we had over 100 quilts from our guild. I would love to see that again! I look forward to seeing you all at our November meeting. Until then...happy quilting! As we do not have a storage place at the firehouse, we are dependent on volunteers willing to take home a bin of books and return them each month at our business meeting. Those volunteering have access to the books in their bin for the whole month, and each month they may take a different bin. If you are willing to help with the library, please let me know. The more volunteers, the more books on display each month. Loretta Shinol, Librarian [email protected] 703-866-3984 SQU FALL AUCTION Thanks for EVERYONE’s help and participation in our annual auction. Thanks to you it was a great success. November Program Judy Gula from Artistic Artifacts will be presenting on November 15, 2016. This is the description of her lecture. Embellishments Explained & Illustrated Judy’s art quilts are all embellished, whether selectively or lushly. In this lecture/trunk show, she shows off a variety of popular embellishments and explains how she has used them — and how you can too! Embellishments included Angelina fibers, paint, buttons, beads and more. Judy will also briefly describe the processes behind several surface design techniques: block printing with wooden printing blocks, monoprinting using a Gelli Arts™ Gel Printing Plate and discharging using deColourant. These techniques result in beautiful, one of a kind fabric to include in your textile projects. After the program, show and tell and announcements, there will be a workshop of Embellishments at her shop, Artistic Artifacts, 4750 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, VA. I suggest you pack a lunch that day and eat before we leave or in the car. I will not be doing a run to a restaurant due to us traveling to the shop. From Judy, We will have 4 stations, where you can try your hand at several "embellishment" techniques including 1. Wood block printing 2. Angelina fibers and film 3. Transfer Artist Paper 4. Beading on fabric can include buttons, sequins You will gain firsthand knowledge on how to use these embellishment products and techniques and you even get to take home a sample for reference. Takedown Takedown Takedown Springfield QU Basics If you are new to Springfield QU, here is the lowdown on SQU meetings…it’s easy—we meet EVERY Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.! The first Tuesday of each month is our business meeting. It sounds like something you might want to miss, but believe me, you don’t. Besides business, there is always a lot more...block of the month, meet the quilter, or whatever. “Stay tuned” to your monthly newsletter to find out what will be taking place at each business meeting. • The third Tuesday of each month is our program meeting. • The second and fourth Tuesdays of each month are known as “off-Tuesdays” and are Sit ‘n Sew. Come to the firehouse bingo hall; bring a quilt to baste; bring sewing; bring knitting, or just bring yourself. Sometimes our “special interest groups” also meet on these days. Whatever is going on, since Springfield QU is “where the fun is,” you can be sure that there will be lots of laughter on these days. During the summer EVERY Tuesday is an “off-Tuesday.” We have no formal meetings in July and August. • Fifth Tuesdays are the days that we devote to Quilting for Others—our on-going charitable efforts. Usually working in assembly-line fashion, we make quilts for wounded and ill soldiers or pillowcases for needy children or Christmas stockings for ECHO. The newsletter will always give information about upcoming fifth Tuesday projects. Our schedule is designed to make your calendar planning easy! Just don’t ever plan anything else for any Tuesday morning; you already have plans! Yes, if you want the full “Springfield Experience,” come to a meeting every Tuesday. • NEWSLETTER NEWS Don't forget to send your input for the December issue of the newsletter to [email protected] NLT Friday, November 18.
