Under the Sea! - Teignmouth Community School

This half term Year 2 have decided that their topic will
be…
‘Under the Sea!’
During the topic we will be finding out all about under the
sea. We will begin the topic by watching the film, ‘Finding
Nemo,’ then from this the children will be writing their own
character descriptions and story openers. We hope to visit
Plymouth aquarium and weather dependent to go rock
pooling!
These will be the main focus areas for the topic.
Knowledge of the World (Science, Geography, History):
Mathematics and Computing (Maths and ICT):
The children will be set for Maths and taught according to their
needs. We are following the programme ‘Rising Stars.’ They will
cover number sense, (looking at place value, odd and even numbers
and number facts) addition reasoning, multiplication reasoning and
geometric reasoning. (shape, space and measure) The children will
also begin to use the Matheletics program to support their
mathematics.
They will continue to learn the 2, 3, 5, 10 timetable and they need
to recall these number facts in and out of order.
Literacy
The children will be either set for Read, Write Inc or Literacy
and language depending on their needs.
We will be looking at how the weather and temperature affects
the sea. The children will be exploring the different creatures
that live in the sea and they will also be finding out how and what
the sea creature eat? They will be learning about divers and
investigating suitable materials for their suits, looking at how
their equipment has changed over the years and what do they do.
We will be using maps to locate and name the seas around the
world and those surrounding the UK.
Throughout our topic we will be linking it to our Literacy.
We will begin by writing descriptions of sea characters from
Finding Nemo. The children will create a story opener based under
the sea. We are going to be reading the story, Commotion in the
Ocean and the children will write their own poems. They will have
a go at creating their own magical sea creatures. We will also be
making an information leaflet about under the sea.
Expressive Arts and Design (Music, Art and D&T):
The children will continue to be taught PE by a specialist. Where
possible, links to the topic will be made. The children will be
working on balance, coordination and agility in both Games and
Gymnastics.
The children will be looking at and creating their own tropical fish!
We will be designing and making an aquarium out of a cereal box.
They will use pencils to sketch the detail of a shell and then make
shells out of clay.
PSED and Religious Education:
We will be following the Golden Promises with a focus on showing
respect to one another at all times. We will also be looking at how
we make the right choices and the consequences of wrong choices.
The children will learn about the story of ‘Noah’s Arc.’
Physical Development:
Outdoor Learning:
In outdoor learning the children will be taught by a specialist
teacher. The class will be learning about the school environment,
life cycles, bush craft skills and about gardening skills. They will
undertake a variety of activities depending on weather and time
of the year.
Home Learning:
TEIGNMOUTH
All home learning is set on a Friday and handed in on the following
Wednesday. Your child is in a class where they are always
encouraged to ask if they do not understand. This applies to home
learning too! If they get home and are unclear of the task, please
encourage them to come in and ask for further help. We are always
flexible.
The children will receive numeracy, literacy/topic and sometimes
spellings for their home learning. This should not take them any
longer than one hour in total, so if you try to spread this out over a
few days it will make it more manageable for your child to finish.
The Home Learning projects last year were so successful, so this is
something we are going to continue to do. We thoroughly enjoy
receiving the children’s projects and really appreciated the time and
effort spent on them!
In addition, it is important for your child to be reading daily. Please
make sure that your child is changing their reading book regularly.
