Follow in the footsteps of historic royal visitors VISIT 14809 Gainsboro 4.qxp:Layout 1 4/3/09 17:27 Page 2 Gainsborough Old Hall is truly one of the hidden gems of Lincolnshire. Over five hundred years old, it is one of the best preserved timber framed manor houses in the UK. The impoverished Burgh family sold their home in 1596 to William Hickman, a London merchant. Although a number of “home improvements” have been made over the years, it remains a “textbook of medieval architecture”. (Simon Jenkins in “England’s Thousand Best Houses”). From the vast arched roof of the Great Hall, to the magnificent medieval kitchen, the Old Hall provides a fascinating insight into life in days gone by. The Pilgrim Fathers worshipped within its walls before setting off to America in search of religious freedom. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, also preached here to the townsfolk who gathered in the Great Hall. Louvre Room Welcome to Gainsborough Old Hall Medieval Manor House.
