David Dyer Memorial Service
Over 200 people attended a celebration of David Dyer’s contribution to Camberwell Grammar School and
to education generally this week in The Camberwell Room. Several people – colleagues, friends, and past
students – spoke movingly about our past Headmaster’s (1966-1987) influence on this school and on their
lives. It was a pleasure to have Mrs Betty Dyer, her children, Elizabeth, John and Sarah, and their families
here and to pay tribute to their husband, father and grandfather. The ‘David Dyer Fitness Centre’ in our
new Sports building is named in his honour.

Senior School House Music Competition
Congratulations to all students who competed in our House Music Competition last night. It has been
challenging for the students to prepare and rehearse their items so early in the school year. Normally we
have some time to psyche ourselves up for this major event in the School Calendar but this year, in an
attempt to spread the load more evenly, we have experimented with having it now. The result suggests that
the students rose to the challenge admirably, with the quality of the performances overall being of a very
high standard. The work of the arrangers and conductors and accompanists was particularly impressive last
night, but so too was the way that all Houses, came together as one and sang with passion and conviction.
Congratulations to Steven House for their victory on the night, and to all Houses for the way they participated.
Congratulations also to our Prefect group who presented a very funny performance at the end of the evening.
Many thanks to all House and Music staff for the support that they have given to the students throughout the
preparation period, and to our Director of Music, Mr Ben Bishop who kept a watchful eye over it all. Thanks
also to our adjudicator on the evening, Mr Doug Heywood. We are grateful to the large number of parents
who came along also to support this event.
Years 9 and 10 Production
Our students have been working tirelessly with a group of girls from Canterbury Girls’ Secondary
College, to prepare for this year’s Year 9 and 10 play, John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, directed by
Ms Penelope Wood.
There will be one performance in the Middleton Theatre, Performing Arts Centre, on Tuesday 21 March at
7.30pm. A flyer is attached to this Bulletin explaining how to reserve tickets and I encourage you to support
our cast and crew by attending the performance.

House Athletics
It was a great day yesterday as we contested the annual House Athletics championships. The boys are to be
commended for their excellent sportsmanship and the enthusiasm with which they approached their events.
There were many stellar performances and our Athletic’s Coaches are certainly excited about the season
ahead. Results will be announced at Monday’s Assembly.

Schoology Workshops/Year 7 Camp Information and Form Group Gatherings
We are looking forward to next Wednesday and the various activities planned for the night. Schoology
workshops will take place on the second level of the William Angliss Building, commencing at 6.00pm.
Year 7 parents are then invited to attend a Camp Information Session in the Middleton Theatre, where there
will be a chance to ask questions about the upcoming Year 7 Camp. Following this, parents are invited to
drinks and nibbles with their son’s Form Teacher in various locations around the PAC. This presents an
excellent opportunity to meet with other parents from the same Form group.

Year 4 and 5 Camps
David Dyer Memorial Service
Having just returned from enjoying both the Year 5 and Year 4 camps, I am once again trumpeting the virtues
of such experiences for our boys. From the thrill of the flying fox, the skill refinement of archery, the push and
pedal of bike riding, or the splash and wobble of canoeing; the boys embraced the opportunities to challenge
themselves and in many cases experience the new. The Year 5 camp is focused on group problem solving,
leadership and perseverance, within a fun-filled supportive environment. Away from home and family, the
boys gained a greater sense of independence, self-reliance and camaraderie. They persisted with their
problem solving during ‘initiatives’ and left their fears behind on the launch pad for the flying fox.
On the Year 4 camp the boys practised their surf safety and learnt rescue techniques, before grabbing a
board and riding the waves. The next day they were netting fish and learning about the health and ecology
of the estuary. Later they would climb the lighthouse and canoe the river. Back at camp there were group
rotations through the ropes course, mini golf and ball games.
Throughout their time on camp the boys developed friendships, grew in confidence and generated a lot of
laughs and lasting memories. It was a privilege to have that time with the boys.

Inter-House Swimming Carnival
All students in Year 3, 4 and 5 will participate in our Junior School Inter-House Swimming Carnival on
Friday 3 March from 12.30pm to 3.00pm at the new Sports Centre pool. We invite and encourage parents to
attend. All boys participating will need a House swim cap, which can be purchased from the Junior School for $10.

Junior School Soiree
Each term, a Music Soiree is held in the Junior School, giving instrumental students the opportunity to
gain performance experience before a warm and encouraging audience. Our Term 1 Soiree will be held on
Wednesday 15 March at 6.00pm in the Music and Movement Centre. If your son would like to perform in the
Soiree, he should collect a form from the M and M Centre and take it to his music lesson so that his Music
Teacher can fill out the performance details. It is important that Music Teachers assist their students in the
preparation of their performance pieces. Performance details for the Term 1 Soiree must be returned by
Wednesday 8 March. This informal concert should conclude at about 7.30pm.
Boys who learn an instrument outside the school are most welcome to participate.
Helen Thomas, Assistant Director of Music Junior School
Junior School Photo Day
On the morning of Tuesday 28 February the Junior School class, individual and family photographs will
be taken. Boys are asked to ensure they are particularly neat and tidy for these photos. Correct summer
uniform with the shirt as the outer garment is required. Please refer to page 29 of the ‘Information for Parents
2017’ booklet for the school policy on hair and jewellery. Boys with brothers will have a family photo. If all
siblings are in Junior School you do not need to do anything, a family photo will be taken. For siblings in
Middle School and Senior School you should have already returned a booking slip in order to ensure these
students are able to leave their class. Unfortunately, if your son is late or absent on this day we cannot
re-schedule photos but you will still receive a class photo.

Good luck to First Table Tennis team in their semi-final this weekend against Trinity. With only two rounds
remaining in the summer season please refer to the Bulletin, Facebook, noticeboards and daily notices for
information relating to the summer presentation evenings, Colours, winter pre-season trials, team lists and
practice sessions. Email [email protected] for further information on any of the above.
Mouthguards are highly recommended and we offer a fitting service here at school. Please collect a form from
the Sport Department and put Thursday 9 March in your diaries for the fitting, at lunchtime in the Sports Centre.
Sport Report
Last Saturday, CGS triathletes kicked off another round of summer sport, heading to Sandringham for
Race 4 of the Active Tri series in what could only be described as challenging conditions. For the Mini
distance triathletes, the 300m swim was cancelled due to the dangerous swells and replaced with a beach
run. Charlie Harper took advantage of these new conditions and following a quick 10k bike and 2k run
recorded his first ever podium finish of third in the under 14/15 age group. Lachlan Waycott also recorded a
great time for an impressive fifth place in the same age group.
In the Sprint Category, the swim was allowed, albeit with a much-reduced distance from the originally planned
750m. Alistair Haslam and Harry Swingler best handled the treacherous and choppy waters. With some very
close racing between students in this age group category, ultimately it was Nicholas Liew that recorded the
fastest overall time due to consistency across all three disciplines.
The senior squash teams had an encouraging return to their season with 3 wins and 3 close losses. The 1sts
played against Trinity and started off well with captain Richard Dardis displaying a strong performance in his
singles to give the team a 1 rubber to 0 lead. However, the next few rubbers were all close fought matches
in which Camberwell was unable to prevail in, eventually leading to a 4 rubbers to 1 defeat. The seconds
started off the season with a win thanks to the culmination of individual skill displayed by Nick Gooden,
Oscar Balla and Cameron Miller.

Music
On Thursday 23 March at 7.30pm in the Middleton Theatre, the Music School is presenting ‘A Polyphony
of Pianos’, a concert showcasing the talents of the piano students at Camberwell Grammar School.
The programme will include a performance of Saint-Säens ‘Carnival of the Animals’, featuring eight pianists,
a chamber ensemble of ten players and a narration by the Headmaster, Dr Paul Hicks. The remainder of the
concert will be given over to items for various combinations of players on one or two pianos.
This is a free concert but you are encouraged to book seats in advance at www.trybooking.com/OWVC.
The evening has been designed to not only celebrate the piano, but to give our piano students an opportunity
to have some fun with their peers. I am sure it will be a delightful evening for all, so please come along and
support the hard work of our boys.

New ‘Pay it Forward’ Initiative
Friends of Performing Arts in conjunction with the Music School
Do you have any pre-loved instrumental music books
sitting unneeded at home?
Please bring your old instrumental music books to the
Music School Office
Friends of Performing Arts and the Music School are collecting pre-loved instrumental music
books to recycle to CGS music students.
The idea is to build a library at the Music School for teachers to access for students. This
initiative is organised by FOPA and we hope that it will foster a sense of community amongst
the boys as well as show respect towards the environment by recycling.
Any stock that is unable to be used will be included with the Friends of Library annual donation
to the Les Twentyman Foundation.
Books need to be in reasonable condition with minimal markings.
We thank you for your support.
