ISSUE NINETY SEVEN, MARCH 2013 Bay of Plenty Cricket Trust Rare Bird Sighting in Kopurererua Valley Receives $50K Boost The Bay of Plenty Cricket Trust can move forward with the development of its new pavilion after receiving a $50,000 donation from Pub Charity in January. Construction of the toilets and a storage area was completed in December last year and the Trust intends to start on the pavilion stage later this year. A Matuku (Australasian bittern) has been sighted by contractors in Kopurererua Valley near an area of maturing re-vegetation that was planted by the Kopurererua Valley Rotary Centennial Trust. Rotary Centennial Trust Chairman Ian Wilson says “this is a great milestone and a real boost for all of us involved in the restoration work in Kopurererua Valley. The benefits of over nine years of native planting and other work is really starting to show, it’s just fantastic.” There are fewer than 1000 of the birds left in New Zealand and they are a potential indicator of wetland health because they are dependent on the presence of high quality, ecologically diverse habitats and rich food supplies. Principal City Partners Kelvin Jones, General Manager of the Bay of Plenty Cricket Trust is appreciative of the support received. He says “the Pub Charity donation certainly helps towards achieving our dream of developing a facility we can all be proud of. We have applied to host the 2014 Cricket World Cup qualifying tournament so a completed pavilion would be vital for that event.” Bay of Plenty Cricket is supported by Craigs Investment Partners through the City Partnership programme.
