BA – Psychology - Red Deer College

What Can I do with my Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Psychology?
About Psychology
Psychology is a fascinating discipline; it is the study of mental processes and
behavior. Psychologists seek to examine and explain the biological, cognitive and
social determinants of human behaviour. At a basic level, psychology students
come to understand and appreciate the many factors that influence and motivate
human behaviour. Psychology graduates generally have superior skills in problem
solving, critical thinking, collecting, analyzing and interpreting data, writing and
communicating. Psychology students also develop a number of valuable skill-sets,
including the ability to formulate evidence-based arguments, critically evaluate
research findings, and identify important ethical issues. Such skills are highly
valued by employers in both the public and private sector.
Career/Job Opportunities
Many students graduating with a bachelor's degree will work in some division of
human or social services. Some common job titles in the area include: Case
Management, Career Counselor, Rehabilitation Specialist, and Psychiatric
Technician. Some important skills for those working in this area include the ability
to assess client needs, keep thorough and accurate records, express care and
empathy and to act as an advocate for your client. As an undergraduate, you have
also done a considerable amount of research and writing. This skill would be useful
in many jobs such as a library assistant, probation officer, business manager, case
worker and many others.
Through graduate studies in Psychology, students may become chartered
psychologists, working in clinical settings with clients who have emotional problems
or mental illness. They may also study to become research psychologists in one of
the many areas of psychology. Graduates may also go on to professional studies in
fields such as medicine, law, or business. Other related career areas include:
• Social Services
• Government and Civil Service
• Research
• Law Enforcement and Corrections
• Counselling
• Public Relations
