We have been involved in repainting the pre-school recently. They need help with: Teaching children English through songs (they speak Shona) needs to be built in the future. Potential areas of involvement include: Assist teachers in classrooms Possible construction assistance ORPHAN INITATIVES We continue to maintain relationships with those we have served in the past. Below a number of the homes are described. Your stay may involve some level of interaction with them but they are no longer the primary focus of our volunteer program. DANAI ORPHANAGE This orphanage is home to 30 children, Playing games with children aged 3-17. These children are form Maintenance and refurbishment different backgrounds. In some cases they do have parents who do not have RUJEKO SCHOOL This school is home to many orphans, and has around 50 children around the ages of 6 to 12. The school consists of only two rooms that are about 2m x 2m, made up of old scraps of plastic and sticks. Children do not have school benches or desks and a flattened cardboard is used as a blackboard. Volunteers may participate in various forms of outreaches, mainly: Caring for the vulnerable Ministry orphanage project. But the vision of the project has grown bounds and leaps. In partnership with Living Hope, what was one project, became a project serving many more needs. What to expect: Here is how a typical day in the life of a Harare ACTS volunteer might take shape. Please note that your actual itineraries may differ from this schedule, as it depends on your own experience / interests and the number of other volunteer placements at the same time. You may be required to share ablutions and bedroom with other volunteers of the same sex. All bedding is provided, unless there are a large number of volunteers on the project simultaneously. Should you need to bring your own bedding, your project facilita- tor will inform you nearer to the time of your arrival. All meals and transportation to and from your projects will be provided and organised by your volunteer coordinator. Laundry is not included, but can be done for you at the project for a small fee. We are also available to organize additional tourist activities, which will be at your own cost. Meals All meals will be provided for you by our staff during your stay at various houses, camps and while travelling between sites. We do everything we can to provide for any dietary requirements, but we may have to ask you to bring some things with you. If what you need is not available locally. Weekend Excursions: Sat 1: We travel 90 km East of the Capital City to a private game lodge called Chengeta Safari Lodge. Here we will spend the day enjoying a buffet lunch and your choice of two pre-included activities (horse ride, clay pigeon shooting, game drives, elephant interaction, etc). Sat 2: We visit a number of markets in Harare, including ‘Doon Estate’, known for its souvenirs, traditional crafts, artwork and pottery. This afternoon we will head north out of the city into rural communal land where we will have a picnic supper at one of locals favorite sunset spots. Last Week: An adventure awaits you, this morning we travel for 4 hours into the interior where we will be staying in rooms at Antelope Park. Once settled in, our guide will talk us through some of the many activities on offer. Antelope Park is world famous for its lion breeding program and was the base for the documentary series “Lion Country”. The park is home to a wide variety of antelope and bird species. Pre-included in your stay is your choice of one of the following activities – cub viewing, game drive, cub feeding, elephant interaction, horse safari and carriage ride. Extra activities such as lion walks, sunset cruises, canoe use and elephant swims are optional.
