socioeconomic,physicalandspirituallandscape.Poetswillexaminepoetrywritteninresponsetothiscriticalincidentasa
springboardtowritingSocialCommentaryPoemsontheissuesfacingthecityin2017.

Inthisworkshopwewilllearnsimplepracticesthathelptogroundandcenterwritersandperformersastheydigdeepand
writethehard:trauma,griefandloss.Whenwearewritingandperformingpiecesthatmattertous,whosedetailswe
know,wherewefeelthepainandweightinourownbodies,wealsomustlearntocenterourselves,andgroundourselves
tolessenthere-traumatizationthatcanhappenasweshareandwriteourwounds.Thisworkshopwillbemorecentered
ontoolstobetterequipustowritethanitwillbeaboutsharingourstoriesorworkshoppingourwriting.

Whatisandwhatisnotthecaseoftenshowsthedisparitybetweentwothingsasmuchasitshowsthesimilarity.This
workshopstartsfromthepremisethatbycomparingwhatistowhatisnot,orwhohasandwhodoesnothave,metaphor
hasthepowertoturnhowwethinkabouttheworldupsidedown.Studentswillthinkaboutmetaphorasawayto
transformordinaryobjects,identitiesandinfrastructureoftheworldby“breakingthemetaphor”:investigatingwhatcan
begeneratedandrevealedthroughunexpectedjuxtaposition.
