1.0 Word Analysis, Fluency, and Systematic Vocabulary Development
Students use their knowledge of word origins and word relationships, as well as
historical and literary context clues, to determine the meaning of specialized vocabulary
and to understand the precise meaning of grade-level-appropriate words.
Word Recognition
1.1 Read aloud narrative and expository text fluently and accurately and with appropriate
pacing, intonation, and expression.
Vocabulary and Concept Development

Materials:
Ben and Me by Robert Lawson
Vocabulary worksheet for
foreword and each chapter
Pictures showing the vocabulary word if available. Example: a quill pen

Direct instruction:
The student will get a folder with vocabulary sheets inside, comprehension questions, and the
novel.
Teacher will give pull out vocabulary sheet and go over each word, student will check known
words, (prior knowledge) teacher will verbally explain each word and show picture’s to student.
The student will go over the chapter and find new words, in the chapter.
The student will then read with the teacher chapter out loud.
Comprehension questions will be discussed and answered verbally or in written form,
depending on the student’s needs.
After reading, go over the vocabulary list and see what words the student has learned. Also,
add new works that were not listed and not known.
Homework: will have student pick a few words they need extra help with and write a sentence
using the words or an illustration. The student may use http://www.wordsmyth.net/ for further
help.
Assessment: Teacher will go over homework with student the following day. Then, continue
on to the next chapter.
After the book is finished student will do a final project using vocabulary in a word search, or
crossword puzzle or mini-dictionary.
