The 1552 Society Making a Pledge An opportunity to say thank you If you are intending to make a gift in your Will to the CH Foundation (Charity No 306975), or indeed have already done so, please complete and return the enclosed Legacy Notification Form. It is a very encouraging indication of your support and we can then record your intentions, express our appreciation and offer you membership of the 1552 Society. Any indication by you has no legal status whatsoever. A legacy to Christ’s Hospital is one of the greatest gifts you can make, and a testimony to your affection for the school and all that it stands for. It will help to ensure that we can continue to provide an outstanding education for children from all walks of life for future generations. Whilst some of our benefactors prefer to stay anonymous, where possible we would like to show our appreciation of your intent, through membership of 1552 Society. The 1552 Society was established in 2005 with the purpose of honouring and thanking, during their lifetime, those who have indicated a bequest to CH. There are currently over 620 members of the 1552 Society, all of whom are invited annually to a school event. In recent years members have enjoyed watching Beating Retreat, attending lectures and hearing pupils perform at the Big School Concert. All those who make a gift in their Will to Christ’s Hospital are automatically welcomed as members of the 1552 Society, and we very much hope that you will wish to join this group For further information or assistance please contact: Development Office 01403 247588 [email protected] The Counting House, Christ’s Hospital, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 0YP Registered Charity No: 306975 YOUR LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE Christ’s Hospital The Development Office can provide examples of wording for you to consider. The main ways of legacy giving are as follows: A School Which Offers Life-Changing Opportunities Christ’s Hospital has provided an unrivalled start in life for disadvantaged children for nearly five centuries. We have always believed that challenging social inequality and promoting social mobility begins with education. Christ’s Hospital’s proven ability to support and provide an excellent education to the most able and disadvantaged is unique and distinctive. The school transforms the lives of young people at a crucial stage in their development, making a lasting and positive difference. We can only do this thanks to the foresight of our founders and, crucially, the generosity of generations of philanthropic Old Blues and friends of CH. Together they have built a Foundation that enables us to offer financial support on a much greater level than any other independent school in the UK. Christ’s Hospital A School Built on Giving Since 1552 the generosity of our legacy benefactors has been fundamental to the development of the School. Today, legacies are increasingly important to Christ’s Hospital’s ability to fund bursaries for the neediest of pupils. Legacy giving offers an opportunity to make a charitable gift in your Will, which has no cost to you during your lifetime. Additionally a bequest to CH is exempt from inheritance tax and has the potential to reduce the tax implication on family and loved ones. For those who leave 10% or more of their estate to charity, inheritance tax reduces from 40% to 36%. “I charge you never to forget the great benefits that you have received in this place, and in time to come according to your means, to do all that you can to enable others to enjoy the same advantage; and remember that you carry with you, wherever you go, the good name of Christ’s Hospital. May God Almighty bless you in your ways and keep you in the knowledge of his love now and forever.” The Charge. Read out to all Grecians at the Leavers' Service. We are asking friends of CH and Old Blues who look on CH with pride, to consider supporting future pupils through a legacy. We are proud of the educational opportunities that CH offers pupils and hope that you will join generations of Old Blues and supporters who have remembered CH in their Will. Residuary gifts The residue of your estate once all other gifts have been made. This is particularly simple as you neither have to quantify the sum nor worry about inflation. Pecuniary gifts A fixed sum of money. The value in real terms may decrease over time due to inflation. The best way to reconcile this position is by means of a residuary legacy. Reversionary legacies A reversionary legacy allows you to provide for your family first and then charity. It involves leaving your assets to trustees so that the beneficiaries can enjoy the benefits during their lifetime, with the whole, or a portion, reverting to Christ’s Hospital on their death. Specific bequests A gift of personal possessions such as a house, land, books, musical instruments, shares or a painting. If you are intending to leave a specific bequest, we would be delighted to discuss this with you to ensure that your wishes are met. Codicils If you have already drawn up a Will, you may add a bequest by way of a Codicil. This is an additional document to be kept with your Will and the most efficient way of making an addition to your Will at no extra cost. We can provide you with a Codicil form. We strongly recomend you consult a solicitor before making or changing a will. “Christ's Hospital has helped me to blossom in a wide range of areas, and given me memories and experiences that I will cherish for a long time to come.”
