Baltimore City Renewable Energy Purchasing Guide

Baltimore City Renewable Energy Purchasing Guide
Renewable energy is any form of energy that comes from naturally replenished sources
including sunlight, wind, and geothermal heat. Compared to non-renewable resources, renewable
energy is more sustainable because it produces less greenhouse gas emissions and hazardous byproducts and it doesn’t rely on limited fuel sources. In addition, some renewable energy systems can
provide individual homeowners more energy independence from the energy grid by allowing them to
produce some or all of their energy.
In Baltimore City, there are a few renewable energy resources that Baltimore City residents can
easily take advantage of including:
Solar Power: Solar power is generated when photovoltatic (PV) cells convert the sun’s rays into
electricity. Homeowners can power their homes with solar energy by purchasing PV panels from a solar
provider or signing a Power Purchasing Agreement (see below).
Solar Hot Water (SWH): Instead of using an electrical hot water heater, solar hot water allows
homeowners to heat their home’s water and air using the sun’s warmth. This system requires installing
a collector on the roof of a home and a system to deliver water to and from the collector.
Geothermal: Using deep underground pockets of heat, a geothermal system can heat and cool a
home’s air and water. Geothermal systems require installing pipes deep underground and linking them
to your house’s HVAC system.
Wind Energy: Wind turbines generate electricity using the force from wind currents. Presently,
residential wind energy is not easily attainable in Baltimore; however, homeowners do have the option
of signing a Power Purchasing Agreement (see below) with an energy supplier to have their energy
sourced from wind power generated outside the city.
Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA): Energy buyers can sign a contract with their energy supplier to
have some of their energy sourced from renewable energy systems. Typically, this will require a minor
increase on the cost of energy per unit on a home’s bill. Sometimes, PPAs can be made where a
company will install and maintain a solar system on a homeowner’s property, while the homeowner
directly purchases the energy generated by that system.
