Jack Evans, Chief Staff Officer Eighty-five students, including children and grandchildren of Supply Corps officers and Supply enlisted personnel, were awarded Navy Supply Corps Foundation scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year. This year the scholarship applications were uploaded to a secure web site making them available for each board member to review and grade from home. The selection board convened virtually in mid April and then met as a group on May 1 in Atlanta. The 199 applicants were ranked on scholastic ability, character, leadership, and financial need. The names of the applicants were blacked-out on the application in order to remove any bias in the selection process. The board awarded 85 scholarships worth $203,500. This is in addition to 15 scholarships valued at $62,500 that were awarded last year as multiyear awards, for a total of $266,000. Of the total scholarships awarded, 14 were multi-year scholarships while 71 were single-year scholarships. We’re currently looking at a river cruise in Southern France from Avignon, near Nice, to Chalon-surSaone, near Lyon. (Go to www.vikingrivercruises. com for more information) If we can assure the company of either 150 or 200 passengers, we can get a significant price break. With that number, they will dedicate a riverboat entirely to the Foundation. If we can’t fill the entire boat, they will still give the Foundation special pricing. We tried to pick a date in the summer that would not impact college graduations, summer vacations, etc. We realize that it is a long way off, but planning is essential. Right now we would like to get a “wind chill” indication of interest. So if you are remotely interested in this adventure, which is open to all members, friends, Image courtesy of Viking Cruises By RADM (Ret.) Smoke Hickman, History and Heritage Chair The more than 200 year history of the Supply Corps is full of significant achievements and owes much to the forward thinking of many individuals over the years. In many respects, our system may have been one of the first to incorporate the concept of Supply Chain Management, an idea that now reflects the leading edge of logistics thinking. Many of the individual stories were captured in RADM Frank Allston’s fine book “Ready for Sea” in the mid 1990s. This is an outstanding compilation of many experiences/vignettes/observations throughout our history but, it is not a comprehensive history of the Supply Corps, nor does it include a vital part of that history...the development of the U. S. Navy Supply System. The Foundation Board concluded that it is vital to include both the system development (BUSANDA, NAVSUP, etc.) and the Supply Corps to reflect our complete history. The Foundation recently signed a contract with Mr. Jeff Rodengen, CEO, Write Stuff Books, to research and write the history of the Supply Corps, a work that will also include the development of the Navy Supply System. Mr. Rodengen is an award- The Foundation Board concluded that it is vital to include both the supply system development and the Supply Corps to reflect our complete history. winning author who has written several books on the history of commercial companies and has a Navy background. Please check them out at www.writestuffbooks.com. Initial interviews and research has begun and will pick up speed in the next few weeks. Our history will be depicted in a hard bound “coffee table” style book, with many pictures as well as time lines showing significant events. Additionally, in the future, we are planning for an interactive electronic version. Our intent is for this book to be cost neutral for the Foundation; the cost of research and publishing is expected to be offset by the sale of the book. More details on pricing, etc., will be in later issues of The Oakleaf. Our planning goal is to complete this book and have a book signing and initial distribution at the San Diego Birthday Ball in March 2013. New Distinguished Alumnus inducted Chapter visits in 2012 By CAPT Tom Billings, SC, USN (Ret.), Chapter Relations Chair The visits to Foundation Chapters by Chairman of the Board CAPT John Kizer, SC, USN (Ret.), have begun and will be continuing throughout the year. As Chairman of the Chapter Relations Committee, I am accompanying John on these trips (I’m his “horse holder”). In March, John and I traveled to the East Coast, visited with the Chapter in the Washington, D.C., area and attended their annual Supply Corps Birthday Ball. A week later we traveled to Pearl Harbor, visited with the Hawaii Chapter, and attended their Birthday Ball. Then back home to San Diego, where we attended the third Birthday Ball in three weeks (sore feet). By the time this issue of The Oakleaf goes to press, we will have completed a visit in June to the Colorado Springs Chapter, and to a prospective Chapter in the Salt Lake City area. Also in June, we traveled to Japan, where we visited the Japan Chapter in Yokosuka and a prospective Chapter in Sasebo. In the last half of July, we will fly to Missouri and Continued on page 5 Thomas Holloran was recently inducted as a Distinguished Alumnus during a ceremony at the Minneapolis Club. Holloran, a lawyer, professor, and business leader, served in the Supply Corps during the Korean conflict aboard USS Salamonie (AO 26) and USS Sigourney (DD 643). Read more about Mr. Holloran in the March 2012 issue of The Oakleaf. Pictured above, from left, are RADM (Ret.) Don St. Angelo, Mr. Holloran, CAPT (Ret.) Len Sapera, and CDR (Ret.) Jack Evans. The Oakleaf July 2012/4 In the Supply Corps Family From one troop to another: Girl Scouts send donated cookies overseas This spring more than 300 Sailors in Afghanistan benefitted from a connection to home made through the long reach of the Supply Corps family. Nine-year-old Callie Peterson, the daughter of Supply Corps CAPT (Ret.) Tom Peterson and his wife Cheryl Hejlik-Peterson, and the scouts of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Brownie Troop 807 made the connection happen. They sent 180 boxes of donated Girl Scout cookies to her friend LT Matt Lipsky, SC, USN and the Sailors stationed with him in Afghanistan in the Navy Expeditionary Support Logistic Group, Forward. Several years ago, when her dad was stationed in Washington, D.C., Callie met then ENS Matt Lipsky, SC, USN and the families had stayed in touch. Callie was grateful that her Dad was not away from home this year but knew that other friends were serving in far away places. Every year during the January through the March Girl Scout cookie sale period, a small number of buyers want to support the troop but need to avoid the calories that may come with the Thin Mints, Samoas or other delicious cookies on sale. They are asked to select a flavor and when the cookies come in they are donated by the troop to a worthy cause. It was these 180 boxes of donated cookies that would find their way to Afghanistan. But first there was the question of logistics…how to get 180 boxes of cookies to Afghanistan. The US Postal Service had an answer, but postage for the 18 cases of cookies would be $240. When word got around about the troop’s project, donations came in and they soon had enough money to cover the postage. Thus it was that on Saturday, April 18 the girls (12 third graders and three second graders) and their leaders, including Callie’s mother and the troop’s mascot, Callie’s six-and-a-halfyear-old brother Tre, spent three hours in the local Ponte Vedra post office Callie Peterson packing cookies into boxes, labeling them and filling out customs forms. “We were spread out all over the lobby of the post office,” Hejlik-Peterson says. As people saw what they were doing, and why, “there was not a dry eye in the place,” she recalls. A week later, LT Lipsky and the Sailors of the NAVELSG were opening boxes of their favorite Girl Scout cookies. He thanked the members of the troop and reported that “the cookies were in excellent condition… packed very carefully with notes for our Sailors.” According to one of the recipients, “there was a huge debate on what type of cookie was the best one…. Thin Mints, Samoas, etc…but one thing was clear…everyone appreciated a little taste of home!” Send your ideas for “In the Supply Corps Family” to [email protected]. LT Matt Lipsky, holding cookie boxes, and Sailors of NAVELSG receives their Girl Scout cookies from Callie Peterson and Ponte Vedra, Fla., Brownie Troop 807. The Oakleaf July 2012/5 Looking for personal stories from Vietnam service for displays By RADM (Ret.) Smoke Hickman, History and Heritage Chair For the past several months the Foundation has been organizing and soliciting volunteers to assist in the development and building of traveling displays that represent the Supply Corps’ involvement in Vietnam. These displays will be portable in such a manner that they can be transported to many different venues of the Supply Corps. The Foundation believes that it is extremely important that we capture the thoughts and experiences of those members who served in Vietnam as part of our history. Initial research shows that there were over 300 Supply Corps officers serving in country in Vietnam at one point during the war, while hundreds of others were serving afloat to support the war efforts. Showing the work of what our members actually accomplished during that period is important to our legacy. We hope to have these displays completed by the end of 2012 and need more volunteers to step up to tell their stories of Vietnam experiences. We’d like to hear your stories and see your photos. If you served in Vietnam, Chapter visits in 2012 (Continued) Ohio, with a stop in Tennessee, where we will meet with the Chapters in St. Louis and Cleveland and the prospective Chapter in Millington. In August, we are tentatively scheduled to fly to Europe, where we will meet with the Italy Chapter in Naples and prospective Chapters in Sigonella, Sicily, and Stuttgart, Germany. Finally, in October, we plan to meet The “White Elephant” in Danang, Vietnam, was home to the Naval Support Activity during the Vietnam war years. Some of the other east coast Chapters will be visited by the Foundation ViceChair, CAPT Len Sapera, SC, USN (Ret.) and the Chief Staff Officer, CDR Jack Evans, SC, USN (Ret.). The purpose of the trips is to enhance communications in general, to provide information about the purpose, goals, and objectives of the Foundation, and to answer questions about the relationship between the Chapters and the Foundation. We will be contacting the Chapter Presidents to create an itinerary as we get closer to the travel dates. We are looking forward to visiting with Chapter members across the nation and abroad. The Oakleaf July 2012/6 Scholarship Profile Scholarship made a huge difference for Navasca Nicole Navasca knows what it means to work hard in school. Navasca, the daughter of retired LSCS Mario Navasco and his wife Rachel, graduated first in her class of more than 550 at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, Va. Her coursework included a dozen Advanced Placement courses, in subjects ranging from science to English to art and at graduation last spring she was Valedictorian of her class. When it came to choosing a college, Navasca found Virginia Tech had everything she wanted. When it came to a career, “growing up I wanted to be everything!” she recalls with a smile. She had always been interested in fashion and had a friend who was a buyer for a local department store. Virginia Tech offers a major in fashion merchandising so that is a potential option for her. She enjoys painting and is also considering a minor in art history. Navasca found out about the Foundation scholarship program through her father, who encouraged her to apply. When she found out the she had been awarded a Foundation four year recurring scholarship, she was “surprised and very happy.” “It made a huge difference and allows me to receive my education, which is so important to me,” she adds. “If you have a good education,” she says,” no matter what, no one can take that away from you.” “I’d like to thank the Foundation members,” she says, “for being tremendously kind and supporting young people in their goal of receiving a higher education.” Her freshman year is over but there Nicole Navasca is much more ahead Navasca says. “It’s hard to believe I’m a sophomore but I’m excited!” In Memoriam The Oakleaf is aware of the following members of the Supply Corps community who passed away over the past few months. October 2011 The Oakleaf July 2012/7 Chapter Profile New England Chapter plays unique role The Navy Supply Corps Foundation’s New England Chapter is one of the newest chapters of the nearly two dozen that comprise the Foundation. And with the move of the Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) to Newport, R.I., more than 18 months ago, the chapter has taken on the unique role as the first opportunity for newly commissioned Supply Corps officers to connect with the Foundation. According to Chapter President and Center for Service Support (CSS) Commanding Officer Captain Dana Weiner, the chapter covers southern New England, from New London, Conn., to Portsmouth, N.H., with the exception of the immediate Boston area that is served by the USS Constitution Chapter. The New England Chapter includes 50 to 75 officers assigned to NSCS and any one of a number of activities on the base in Newport, including the Naval War College, CSS and the NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center. In addition, officers supporting submarine forces in New London, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Defense Contract Management Agency participate in activities. A few reservists and a handful of retirees round out the membership. Weiner’s team is working to see that number grow. The Chapter uses e-mail and social media such as Facebook to keep in touch with members. At any given time two companies of students, or nearly 80 officers, are stationed at NSCS and during their six months in Newport, the Chapter makes it a point to involve them in activities. “We had 160 at our annual Supply Corps Birthday Ball this spring and it was great to see the ensigns come out and enjoy themselves,” Weiner says. The Chapter hosts picnics, barbeques, and other social events as Officers of the New England Chapter include Secretary LT Dan O’Brien, Treasurer LT Greg McCleery, Vice President LCDR Llahn McGhie, and President CAPT Dana Weiner. well, and they hope this year to expand their community outreach efforts. In addition, through their web site (accessed through www.usnscf.com) the Chapter sells commemorative bricks at $50 each. These bricks become a permanent part of the wall at NSCS. Weiner views his role and the New England Chapter as a means to give a good first impression to the new officers. “These are the members of the future,” he says, “and if we do it right they’ll be excited to be involved with their local chapter wherever they serve.” Officers of the New England chapter include Vice President LCDR Llahn McGhie, Secretary LT Dan O’Brien, Treasurer LT Greg McCleery, and Retired Liaison Officer CAPT (Ret.) John Jackson. Anyone interested in participating in events in Southern New England, whether passing through or residing in the area, may contact LT O’Brien at [email protected]. Linda Bird, Membership Chair If you are reading this, then you are not a “lost” member of the U.S. Navy Supply Corps Foundation (USNSCF). Membership in our foundation is based solely on having served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Supply Corps. Unfortunately, however, there are thousands of members who may not know about the foundation and the benefits it provides to the members as well as their families. As outlined in the recently approved “Blueprint for the Future,” one of the USNSCF’s goals is to at least double the of size of the mailing list. We have embarked on a project to explore the use a professional data services company to assist in obtaining current contact information for former Supply Corps officers. As a member of the USNSCF, you can also help to locate members. Through your professional organizations, alumni groups, Christmas card mailing list, etc., if you know of former or current Supply Corps officers who are not members of the USNSCF, please direct them to the web site (www.usnscf.com) where they can register. They just need to click on “New Member” in the Login box on the lower left of the screen and complete the form that appears. You already know the benefits the USNSCF provides, so help us share the information! CDR (Ret.) Connecting through social media By Linda Hall, Web Coordinator Nominations sought for Chapter/Volunteers of the Year and Distinguished Alumni Each year the Foundation selects a Chapter and retired and active duty Volunteers of the Year. These awards are made based on service to the members and commitment to the goals and mission of the Foundation. Any member can submit nominations. Send a brief write-up via e-mail to the Foundation Chief Staff Officer Jack Evans at Foundation@usnscf. com no later than Aug. 31, 2012. The Distinguished Alumni award is made to identify and give appropriate recognition to retired and former Navy Supply Corps officers who have distinguished themselves by obtaining significant success in the public or private sector. See the selection criteria and instructions for making nominations for the DA on the web site at www.usnscf.com/programs. Nominations are due Aug. 31, 2012. In a recent survey of readers of The Oakleaf, many retired and active duty members indicated they are looking for ways to track former shipmates and Supply Corps friends and stay connected to the Supply Corps today. In addition to the Foundation’s web page, www.usnscf.com, the Internet has many other paths to that goal. Members can follow others who have worn or are wearing the Oak Leaf on the Supply Corps Foundation’s Facebook page and on the Supply Corps group on Linkedin. You’ll find links to these sites on the Foundation’s home page at www.usnscf.com. The Foundation Communications Committee is examining the best ways to integrate all of the means to communicate with members as they work to improve the Foundation’s web site. Links on the Foundation’s membership page to the Navy Log and Military.com provide ways to search for former shipmates and Supply Corps Friends. Register for membership on the Navy Log (Navy Memorial Site) - www. navylog.org/ and search more than 615,000 records of individuals with sea service. Another source for finding friends is the Navy Locator on Military.com at www.military.com/ Registration/Navy. Send ideas and suggestions for improving the Foundation’s web site to [email protected]. More about history and In Memoriam To the Editor: Several members wrote in regarding the upcoming Supply Corps history project, citing the book, Ready for Sea, written in 1995 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Supply Corps. Is this new effort reinventing the wheel?. Editors response: In 1995 many of the Supply Corps individual stories were captured in RADM Frank Allston’s fine book “Ready for Sea.” This is an outstanding compilation of many experiences/vignettes/observations of our history and it will be a significant reference for the new book. Excerpts of this book have also appeared in the Navy Supply Corps Newsletter. However, it is not a comprehensive history of the Supply Corps, nor does it include a vital part of that history... the development of the U. S. Navy Supply System. The Foundation Board concluded that it is vital to include both the system development (BUSANDA, NAVSUP, etc.) and the Supply Corps to reflect our complete history. For the fourth straight year, a team of Navy and Marine Corps active duty, retired, Federal and private professionals came together to support the 2012 edition of the Face of America Bike Ride. The objective of the Face of America Bike Ride is to support the rehabilitative efforts of our wounded and disabled veterans while raising awareness regarding the challenges they face after their return from forward deployed areas. Proceeds from fund raising are applied to cover the costs for participating Wounded Warriors to ensure a safe and enjoyable event. This year’s ride was conducted from 28-29 April and included approximately 400 riders of which 60 were Wounded Warriors now living with disabilities as a result of armed conflict. The team was heavily made up of and lead by the Navy Supply Corps. This year’s event was organized by World T.E.A.M. Sports (The Exceptional Athlete Matters), and sponsored by Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Subway, State Farm, Road I.D., Revolution Cycles, and other private agencies. The ride began at the Pentagon with an overnight stop in Frederick, Md. It concluded at Marine Barracks, Gettysburg National Battlefield, Pa.
