Poetry: Form and Convention (Q32704)
Autumn Semester
This module expands on the poetry coverage from Q31701
Creative Writing Practice by looking more deeply and broadly at
ways of reading and writing poems. In the second-year creative
writing modules the focus is largely on form and structure. We
will cover:





traditional forms, such as the sonnet and haiku
sophisticated approaches to rhyme, metre, stanza, etc
experimental and postmodern approaches to form
how different literary traditions and schools approach
poetic form
the relation between literary technique and linguistic
technique
You will be introduced to a wide and diverse range of writers and
techniques as well as exploring the publishing industry as it
relates to poetry. Over the course of the module, you’ll develop
their own creative work as well as your critical and reflective
skills.

Assessment: Creative Portfolio of 3,500 words (70%) and a 1,500
word critical essay (30%)
