TYPICALLY BRITISH
1) Look at the photos. Which things are ‘typically British’?
2) Read the text. Check your answer to 1.
Typically British?
Four foreigners in Britain talk about the people and the country…
1 Nicolae from Romania works in a pub in Manchester
‘British people like children but not in restaurants or pubs. In my pub we have a rule: ‘No children
under 12’. People in Britain drink a lot of coffee – cappuccino and espresso are really popular. They
drink a lot of beer too – men and women.
2 Alexandria from Russia is a student at Bristol University
‘This is not a good country for smokers! Many coffee bars and restaurants are ‘no smoking’. I live
with three British students and they don’t smoke. When I want a cigarette I go into the garden.’
3 Carlos is a tourist from Spain
‘People read the newspaper everywhere – on the train, on the bus, at the bus stop. And the
newspapers are really big! Cars stop in Britain when you stand on the zebra crossing – it’s
incredible! Cars don’t stop for you in Madrid.’
4 Marilia from Brazil works as an ‘au pair’ in Cambridge
‘I think my British family is typical. The woman doesn’t cook – she puts a pizza in the microwave.
But she watches cooking programmes on TV every day! The man cooks at the weekend – he makes
fantastic Indian curries. Their child has a terrible diet. She eats ‘fish fingers’ and chips and goes to
Burger King every week.’
3) Read the text again. Underline three things which are the same in your country, and three
things which are different.

__sometimes_
____hardly ever________

The Mystery of Okinawa
Takanashi always walks three kilometres a day, and he sometimes
rides a motorbike. He often works in his garden, and he usually
does martial arts in the morning. He is never stressed, and he is
hardly ever ill.
Takanashi lives on the island of Okinawa in Japan. In Okinawa
people live a very long time. They are hardly ever ill. Many people
live to be 100 - more people than in other parts of the world. Why?
What is their secret?
1 _____________________________________________________
The Okinawans ear vegetables, fruit, fish, soya, and rice. They
usually have seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day. People
don’t usually drink much alcohol or smoke. They don’t eat much
meat or fast food.
2 _____________________________________________________
Physical activity is very important for the people of Okinawa.
Martial arts, walking, traditional dancing, and gardening are very
popular with people of all ages.

3 _____________________________________________________
In many countries people have healthy diets and do exercise. But
the unusual thing about the people in Okinawa is that they are not
stressed. They are relaxed and take their time. Buses are hardly
ever on time, and people often arrive an hour late for meetings.
Every evening hundreds of people, young and old, go to the beach
to watch the beautiful sunset. People often meditate to relax.
4 _____________________________________________________
Another important thing is that people often work until they are 80sometimes until 90! In the Okinawan dialect there is no word for
‘retired’. They are busy and active all their lives. Old people don’t
stay at home – they go out and meet friends.
When journalists ask people ‘What is the secret of your long life?’,
they answer ‘We are happy, we are always positive, and we are
never in a hurry’.

2) Now look at the key below. What’s the best job for your partner?
Section A: 10+ points. You’re good at the arts, so maybe the best job for you is a singer, an actor, a dancer
or a musician. But maybe you don’t like singing and dancing in front of a lot of people. That’s OK, you can
teach other people.
Section B: 10+ points. OK, you’re active and sporty, but there aren’t a lot of jobs for sportsmen or women.
You can play sports at the weekend and get a job in the week teaching sports in a school or a gym. Or
maybe you can be a salesperson in a sports shop.
Section C: 10+ points. You’re good with your head. Maybe an office job is best for you, but do you like
working with people? Then how about a job in a bank or as a manager in a big company? Do you like
working alone? Then maybe a job with computers is good for you.
10+points in no sections? Don’t worry, there’s a job for you… but we can’t tell you what it is! What do you
think?
3) Work in pairs and answer the questions.
1 Do you think the quiz right about you?
2 what job would you like to do?
A: The quiz says a good job for me is in sports, but I’d like to be a doctor. I like helping people. What about
you?
B: I’d like to be a …
